摘要:
(1) Meningiomas are perhaps the most interesting and versatile of all brain tumours. They may form calcium, cartilage or bone, and may cause secondary bone production and/or bone destruction.(2) Meningiomas may be occasionally mistaken for sellar or extrasellar lesions of other origin.(3) Although usually found in older individuals, meningiomas may occur in children.(4) Not infrequently the only röntgen manifestation of a meningioma may be increased vascularity of the skull, slight thinning of the calvarium, slight irregularity of the inner table, or a very small hyperostosis.(5) The hyperostoses produced by meningiomas have been classified and may be diffuse or nodal and predominantly osteoblastic or osteolytic.(6) The diffuse tumerous hyperostoses must be differentiated from the spongy type of osteoma.(7) Osteoclastic hyperostoses occur more frequently than commonly believed and may appear similar to metastatic carcinoma, oesinophilic granuloma, monophasic Paget's disease and leukemic lesions of the calvarium.(8) An unusual diffuse osteolytic change occurring in the floor of the middle fossa and a cystic type of hyperostosis are described.(9) Röntgenographs of excellent technical quality and a high index of suspicion are required for demonstration and recognition of minimal röntgen changes not infrequently produced by meningiomas.(10) Demineralisation of the sphenoidal ridge may be the only röntgen manifestation of a sphenoidal ridge meningioma and must be differentiated from a normal variant of the ridge and demineralisation produced by aneurysm, metastatic carcinoma, or a glioma.(11) The hyperostosis produced by large outer sphenoidal ridge “en plaque” tumours is striking and pathognomonic.(12) Suprasellar meningiomas may produce a minimum of röntgen changes with little or no deformity of the pituitary fossa.(13) Basilar meningiomas are rare and may produce a demineralisation of the base of the skull which is demonstrable only in the röntgenographs of the base of the skull.(14) The röntgen changes produced by parasagittal meningiomas are variable in type and location.(15) Multiple meningiomas occur more frequently than generally believed.(16) The hyperostosis produced by meningiomas may be much larger or much smaller than the underlying tumour.

摘要:
Two years ago, Dr. Spear delighted us by recaling Douglas Lea, friend, colleague and fellow member of the H.P.A., with a vividness which I thought could hardly be surpassed. Moreover, he commented upon Lea's scientific work with such insight and true appreciation that the lecture constitutes to my mind a most fitting and perfect memorial. Though I find it hard to add substantially to the portrait Dr. Spear painted for us then, I do welcome this opportunity of acknowledging the great debt I owe to Douglas Lea. I was privileged to know him intimately. We were both at Trinity and we were both research students in the Cavendish Laboratory during that exciting period in physics from 1924 to 1933, during which Cockcroft and Walton first achieved nuclear disintegration by accelerated particles, Anderson discovered the positron, Chadwick discovered the neutron, and the Curies discovered artificial radioactivity. Rutherford's genius pervaded the Cavendish in those days, and I think it may be said that in the directness of his approach to problems in radiobiology, Lea showed himself a worthy student of a great master.Lea and I differed in age by four years—which academically amounts to more than a generation—so that I have no very vivid personal recollections of him as an undergraduate. This is a gap in our record of Lea which we may hope some future lecturer will fill in.

摘要:
The radiological demonstration of the malleus and incus should be possible in most technically satisfactory films of the mastoid process. The authors have not been able to demonstrate the stapes with any degree of consistency. The submento-vertical and the Towne's position are the most useful positions for the examination of the ossicles although the handle of the malleus can be readily seen in the lateral view.Anatomical features likely to be mistaken for the shadows of the ossicles are discussed.Pathological changes involving the ossicles, developmental absence, destruction by infection and growths and displacement by trauma are discussed.

摘要:
Accurate radiological visualisation of the urethra, urethrovesical junction and bladder base is assuming increasing importance in the study of mechanical disturbances of these structures in women suffering from stress incontinence of urine. It is also valuable as a means of controlling the operative or non-operative treatment of this trouble-some complaint, and it offers a means, hitherto neglected, of research into the anatomy and physiology of the female bladder and urethra.Adequate study of the female urinary apparatus demands radiography in at least two planes and with the organs in different functional states. Significant departures from the normal may become apparent only when the patient is straining or voiding urine. The technical problems involved have hindered many workers in the past, but they can be overcome, and the object of this communication is to describe methods which have been used regularly for two years and which make it possible for cystourethrography to be carried out as a routine procedure in any X-ray department.Cystourethrography has been used in the male for more than forty years, but the first attempt to apply it to women appears to be that of Norris and Kimbrough (1928), who studied both normal and incontinent women by means of antero-posterior skiagraphs. The advantages offered by lateral views were appreciated by Thomsen (1930, 1932), but the difficulties involved forced him to resort to 45 deg. oblique exposures of the pelvic organs.

摘要:
A simple plasma I131index for assessing thyroid toxicity is described and compared with other methods of measurement. This index was determined for four cases of clinically diagnosed thyrotoxicosis, and seven non-toxic cases. It is shown that the index gives a better separation between toxic and non-toxic states than the other methods (thyroid uptake, thyroid clearance, and urinary excretion), used in this investigation.

摘要:
This is quite a small book of some 80 pages, but nevertheless it is of considerable interest and is full of useful information. The first chapter discusses on general lines the main problems of the radiography of young children, and mentions a few useful yet simple devices which are helpful in positioning children during radiography.

摘要:
A case of extensive diastematomyelia, complicated by the presence of a dermoid tumour, is described. The associated vertebral defects conform to a fairly typical pattern, and lateral tomography of the spine succeeds in demonstrating the bony process transfixing the cord. The necessity for myelography is stressed, since it may reveal abnormalities not previously suspected as, in this case, the dermoid tumour, and since it shows the true extent of the cord division.
