摘要:
The arrangements for the Third International Congress of Radiology in Paris are taking shape. As already announced, the Congress is to be held at the Sorbonne (in the heart of the Latin Quarter) from the 26th to the 31st July, 1931, under the Presidency of Dr. A. Béclère. The Secrétariat (122, rue la Boëtie, Paris 8ème) will forward to members who have paid their subscriptions (300 French francs for full members, and 50 French francs for associate members) particulars of (a) hotel accommodation and lodgings (accommodation will be booked if desired), (b) reduced rates on the French railways (to and from the Congress), and (c) tours at reduced rates after the Congress to different regions of France. The Southern Railway in this country state that very attractive party fares can be quoted for British members arranging to travel to Paris in groups of not less than twenty-five. Such party tickets will give the facility of individual return. The Assistant for Continental Traffic, Traffic Manager's Office, Continental Department, Victoria Station, S.W.1, will be glad to make all the necessary arrangements and reservations for any party which may be formed. In addition, there will no doubt be the usual excursion tickets on issue in July.

摘要:
This Congress and Exhibition have many useful purposes, and one of the most important of them is that they serve to bring together from all parts of the country men who otherwise are spending the rest of the year in industriously ploughing their own, and it is to be hoped fruitful, furrow. Here they can see the most recent inventions, they can spend their well-deserved earnings on taking them away, they can make friends anew, both among the other members of the Congress and among the instruments they see, and they can lay the foundations of fresh friendships. Here there is a great opportunity for informal discussion not only of puzzles in our work, but of problems about the future of radiology. The advantages of comparing notes and taking counsel in that way are extremely obvious, for “By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall”.During the past year there has been a very considerable development in connection with the initiation and development of the radium supply, with the treatment of malignant disease by radium, and with teaching and research. The Radium Commission has been active and has established a number of centres, the national centre of the post-graduate school, which has the imposing title The National Centre and Post-Graduate School of Radio-Therapy, the Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood and the Radium Institute, has started post-graduate instruction.

摘要:
In a letter toThe Times, Mr. Francis Howard refers to the use of X rays in connection with Old Masters:—One safeguard against this irresponsible destruction of pictures is the X ray, which, in spite of some incredulity, has been of incalculable value already in elucidating questions hitherto only amenable to dangerous experiment.

摘要:
I am conscious of having neither the knowledge nor the wit of my predecessors that enabled them to make Addresses to you which will always be memorable in the annals of our Institute. Some account of progress since Dr. Kaye's important and hopeful address to you in 1928 might, however, be attempted. I say “hopeful” advisedly, because he uses that word in one or other of its modifications no less than eight times in the course of his remarks.

摘要:
Considerable interest is being shown at the present time in the use of window-glass which is transparent to ultra-violet light. In response to frequent enquiries, the Building Research Station at Watford has published a Bulletin giving a survey of the relevant facts. The main conclusions contained in the Bulletin are summarised below.Biological evidence indicates that the most effective wave-length is probably about 0·30μ, but owing to the shape of the solar radiation curve the most effective radiation in the solar spectrum is probably about 0·31μ. Ordinary window glass transmits little radiation below 0·32μ, but special glasses can be obtained which transmit something of the order of 87 per cent at 0·31μ. These glasses are, however, unsuitable for window glazing as they are easily scratched. A good glass, having suitable mechanical properties for glazing windows, transmits about 60 per cent at 0·30μ and some 70 per cent at 0·31μ when clean and new. Such glasses are subject to “solarisation,” a chemical change due to exposure tothe sun's rays which results in a decreased transparency to ultra-violet light, and in one case a piece of glass exposed in a south window during the three summer months had its transmission reduced from 65 per cent to 55 per cent. The thin film of dirt accumulated during exposure further reduced the transmission to 52 per cent.

摘要:
The British Institute of Radiology Exhibition for 1930, which was held in the Central Hall, Westminster, on December 3, 4, and 5, again testified to the great care, thought, and energy lavished upon it by those responsible for its organization. It was held in the same Hall as the 1929 exhibition, and there were signs that before long an even larger hall will be necessary to display to advantage the many and varied exhibits.Musical selections were played at intervals on a large electric gramophone kindly provided by Messrs. Philips. This innovation imparted an air of cheerfulness and was very much appreciated. There were in all twenty-seven stands occupied by twenty-two exhibiting firms; we welcomed two exhibitors who were absent last year.

摘要:
The proportion of patients X-rayed has vastly increased in the past few years, and the use of new methods of diagnosis with various opaque substances in kidney and gall-bladder disease has very much increased the cost of X-ray Departments. In addition to this increase it has been the practice in the past few years to X-ray every case of suspected bone injury, even when the chance of fracture is considered remote. It is not the price of apparatus nowadays which is the main cause of alarm in the minds of the Administrative Authorities of Hospitals, but the constantly increasing annual cost of X-ray films and their immediate accessories.

摘要:
My excuse for appearing to-night before you is my enthusiasm for the practical and technical part of my own profession, an enthusiasm which was aroused during the War when, one day, I received a chit to the effect that forthwith (and in those days everything was “forthwith” !) I should assume charge of the X-ray department of the Hospital to which I was attached. My qualifications for such a post were immense for, being completely ignorant of all the principles and practices of Radiology, I was able to commence my new duties with no pre-conceived ideas! The result was that I had to learn from the experience of many failures. Since that time the utilisation of X rays for diagnosis and treatment has been an all-absorbing study. This, however, is hardly sufficient to warrant my addressing you. Your Vice-President, Mr. Furby, knowing that for some years I have conducted classes in Practical Radiography for the Diploma in Radiology, and have taken some slight interest in the training of students for examination for membership of your Society, asked me to make the subject of short paper “Training in Radiography.”The Syllabus for your examination is a very comprehensive one and I have no fault to find with it, except in minor details; the student who has assimilated the subjects therein taught will have an exceedingly sound knowledge of the theories upon which his work will depend.

摘要:
House of Commons.—Commander Bellairs asked the Minister of Health, in view of the undertaking of the last Government to refer the question of radium supplies and prices to the League of Nations, what progress had been achieved, and whether the League had inquired into both the prices and supplies from the Union Minière in Belgian territory.
