摘要:
A comparison of radiation damage and radiation dose in the proximal half of the tibia of weanling rabbits following a single injection of90Sr at two dose levels, 100 and 600 μc/kg, has been made in animals killed at various time intervals up to six months later. An attempt has been made to quantitate the histological changes observed. Relatively little damage was seen at the lower dose level. At the higher dose level there was gross damage. The earliest damage was to the cells in the region of maximum proliferation immediately beneath the epiphyseal plate, within one day of injection. Disturbance of the blood vessels and epiphyseal cartilage plate was first observed at three days. Areas of abnormal cellular proliferation, presumed to be presarcomatous lesions, were seen in osteogenic connective tissue at three months, in regions which had received an accumulated dose of about 10,000 rads. Small discrete early tumours were sometimes noted in a region which had accumulated a similar dose. Multiple frank osteosarcomas had developed by six months. The lack of quantitative methods in histology is emphasised, and the difficulties involved in determining “the carcinogenic radiation dose” are discussed.

摘要:
Localised irradiation in large enough dosage prejudices successful autologous skin transplantation in the rabbit. It appears that the deleterious effects of irradiation in this respect are first manifested in the graft itself; at higher doses, damage to the recipient site prevents takes. At the qualities of irradiation used in these experiments (HVL 0·31 mm of Al and 2·2 mm of Al), 2,200 r to the donor skin prevented successful grafting whereas this dose to the recipient site showed no significant diminution in percentage of graft takes as compared to control levels. Administration of cysteine intravenously just before irradiation afforded partial protection to the donor skin.

摘要:
This book deals with a process of extracting the maximum information from a particular type of radiography. The principle of the author's method, termed “subtraktion”, is as follows. Supposing two radiographs of the same object are taken under identical conditions, and a positive transparency is made of one. If now one looks, or prints, through the superimposed positive transparency and one of the radiographs, an even background blackening is obtained showing no detail.

摘要:
The methods of performing left and right angiocardiography and thoracic aortography, as at present employed in Guy's Hospital, have been described. The essential features of the method are to replace conventional cardiac catheters by wide bore Polythene tubing, and to use the largest vein or artery which is readily available. The advantages obtained are more rapid injection times at lower pressures, with consequent lessening of risk to the patients.

摘要:
Parietography of the stomach has been performed in a series of 65 cases. The results and diagnostic value are discussed. The method has, in many cases, been definitely superior to the conventional examination in showing the tumour and the extent of the infiltration.

摘要:
A method of radiological examination for suspected rupture of the oesophagus is described, injecting a water soluble medium down a Ryle's tube whilst withdrawing it slowly through the oesophagus.Six cases of suspected perforation of the oesophagus are described. In the first case a conventional swallow failed to localise the site of the perforation because of tracking of medium in the para-oesophageal tissues. In the remaining five cases the method recommended demonstrated the site and extent of a perforation when present.

摘要:
The author is a distinguished gynaecologist who has engaged in research into the functional anatomy of the urethra and its supporting structures, the causes and remedies of urinary incontinence and exfoliative cytology. Designed primarily as a text-book for post-graduate teaching, the writing turns to a wider public: it aims at reawakening interest in the subject among qualified gynaecologists and at creating greater awareness of the problems involved among general practitioners. The various aims are reflected by varying standards.

摘要:
A case of necrosis of the cervical spinal cord produced by vertebral angiographyviathe subclavian artery is described. The injection through the subclavian artery was made as usual with a highly concentrated (55 per cent) contrast medium; a large quantity of this had probably been carried into the arterial network of the cord due to a particular pattern of the arterial branches in the neck or to casual direction of the injected stream.
