摘要:
An account is given of pharyngeal deglutition based upon a cineradiographic study of 100 normal subjects. Swallowing is described as a sequence of co-ordinated movements bearing on the bolus during its progress.

摘要:
Measured distributions have been presented for 300 deg. rotation with the centre of rotation lying on the mid-line. These appear to be satisfactory for the treatment of tumours which are situated at the centre of the body or in an anterior position. Distributions are also given for 220 deg. rotation using two axes of rotation and a narrow field width. This method is shown to have considerable advantages in the treatment of tumours laterally situated in the body. Some results are also reported for “split rotation” method which appears to be a useful alternative to the trunk-bridge technique.

摘要:
An account is given of the factors governing the techniques of treating orbital tumours, both benign and malignant. A device for protecting the eye when using 2 MeV radiation is illustrated and briefly described and the principles of ocular protection discussed. An account is also given of some simple technical methods of treating orbital tumours after removal of the eye.

摘要:
In the paper entitledAbsorbed Dose Near Bone: a Conductivity Method of Measurement, by J. F. Fowler,Brit. J. Radiol., 1957, xxx, 361–366, the following corrections should be made:1. In Fig. 2 the current ordinate should read “amp × 1012” instead of “amp × 1010”.2. In the second paragraph on page 362, “induced currents in excess of 10−9 amp” should read “induced currents in excess of 10−11 amp”.None of the other conclusions is affected by these errors.

摘要:
It is often difficult to define a word or a concept in unambiguous terms. Designations may be used which are not uniformly interpreted, or even accepted. One such word is “radiosensitivity”, which is used, sometimes in relation to single cells or cell colonies, sometimes in relation to tissues and total multicellular organisms, to designate the degree of vulnerability after exposure to ionizing radiation. The radiosensitivity of a given organ cannot easily be assessed in such a way that it can be immediately comparable to that of another organ. A tissue which generally is considered to be highly radiosensitive may in fact also range as relatively radioresistant if certain other criteria are used, for instance with relevancy to the well being, or to the survival of the individual. This point is illustrated by comparing the reaction of the spleen and the reaction of the kidney to prolonged irradiation with a rays as in the following experiments. For the experiments 64 mice, six to eight weeks old, males and females from a recessive hairless strain, were used. A capsule of gelatine and denaturated albumen, containing pure polonium, was placed subcutaneously in the back of each animal. The amount of polonium was equal to 7 to 8·5 me/kg body weight, a dose large enough to cause a pronounced chronic intoxication. Half of the animals did not survive 223 days. The last two animals lived 471 and 472 days.

摘要:
Unsharp transitions in incident radiation relief may be due to anatomical and pathological conditions and should therefore be rendered visible in the final radiograph. The harmful effect of “sharpening up” the appearance of unsharp boundaries by excessive contrast is discussed, and the somewhat fallacious link commonly taught between detail, contrast and definition is shown to require qualification. Investigation of the lower limit of perceptible density difference under unfavourable conditions permit an estimate of optimum density range in practice. Some clinical examples are considered and the function of contrast in reproduction is pointed out.

摘要:
1. Fifteen primiparae, with no previous history of renal disease, were studied by intravenous pyelography; firstly when under three months pregnant, secondly within ten days of delivery and thirdly three months after the second pyelogram.2. Only five subjects showed a recognisable change. Two of these were followed up with a fourth pyelogram. The results are tabulated.3. It was concluded:(i) Changes in the calyces and pelves are not common in primiparae during pregnancy: such changes as do occur do not persist to a degree likely to give rise to chronic renal infection after delivery.(ii) The findings of dilatation of the renal pelves and calyces especially on the right side during pregnancy are not themselves pathological.(iii) The persistence of these changes is not necessarily pathological unless associated with both the clinical history and findings of chronic pyelitis.(iv) No useful information can be obtained from the study of the ureters in these cases by intravenous pyelography.4. It is considered that pyelographic abnormalities are likely to be due to a preceding pregnancy when:(i) A history of renal symptoms and signs following a normal pregnancy and delivery, is obtained.(ii) An imbalance in the pyelographic findings on the two sides, the right being more severely affected than the left.(iii) No other findings to explain the discovered changes can be demonstrated.
