摘要:
ABSTRACTThe specific purpose of this paper is to present an overview of mycosis fungoids; the current literature, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, various treatment modalities, and prognosis. Mycosis fungoides is an uncommon malignant disease with a variety of unique challenges; therefore, nurses working in the field of oncology may benefit from a review of current methods of management from the perspective of the nurse oncologist.

摘要:
ABSTRACTRelaxation techniques have been suggested as an effective intervention in the control of pain, nausea, and stress. This article describes one technique, relaxation with guided imagery. Preparation of the learner, assessment prior to learning relaxation, and observations which aid in evaluation are discussed as well as the technique itself.

摘要:
ABSTRACTBecause suicide is a problem that should be anticipated in an oncological clinical practice, the many facets of suicide in the cancer situation, its incidence, its assessment, and its prevention are explored. A study done of suicide cases within the Veterans Administration in 1963 that gives clues as to which cancer patients are at particularly high risk is examined in detail. Nursing interventions which can be used by clinicans, such as assessment questions, counseling techniques, and crisis intervention methods, are presented.

摘要:
ABSTRACTAn overview of drug therapy for chronic, severe pain due to cancer is presented. Differences between acute pain and chronic pain are described and the dimensions of severe chronic pain are presented as physical, psychological, and social. The necessity to treat each dimension is addressed as is the interplay between pain perception and anxiety. The use of non‐narcotic analgesics is described in moderate, acute pain and chronic, aching pain. The effectiveness of commercially available non‐narcotic analgesics is discussed. Narcotic analgesics are usually necessary in chronic, severe pain and equianalgesic doses of available narcotics are listed. Dosing regimens for narcotic analgesics are suggested. Tolerance and dependence do not commonly develop in patients with severe, chronic pain of physical origin and who received appropriately dosed narcotics. Physiological and pharmacological reasons for this lack are discussed. Brompton's Cocktail and other narcotic analgesic combinations are discussed and are shown to be inappropriate. Appropriate adjunctive drugs to narcotic analgesics are discussed.

摘要:
ABSTRACTA model is presented for effectively providing primary care to a group of cancer patients within a subspecialty center. The individual members of the medical oncology team providing this care and their role in each patient's total care are described. In addition, there is a detailed explanation of how the team provides both physiological and psychological care in its response to the patient as a biopsychosocial being.

摘要:
ABSTRACTDuring an informal discussion with some coworkers, the author was embarrassed to discover that not one of the nurses present (herself included) could recall the American Cancer Society's Seven Warning Signals of Cancer. A subsequent survey of 81 nurses employed in a general acute‐care community hospital indicated that this is not an uncommon phenomenon. Questions are therefore raised concerning the actual integration and utilization in our professional practice of one of the most readily available and basic tools of cancer detection.
