摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Office of Extramural Programs, with the cooperation of the Department of Gynecology of The University of Texas System Cancer Center, M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, is conducting an educational program for training nurses from the public health departments, physicians' offices, and small community hospitals to screen for cancer of the head, neck, skin, breast, abdomen, pelvis, and colon. The nurses are referred by and work under the supervision of physicians responsible for patient care.Cancer screening and detection by nurses is both feasible and worthwhile. The process involves thorough inspection and palpation of all accessible sites and the use of a few simple screening procedures.

摘要:
ABSTRACTA philosophical and conceptual framework for the independent practice of oncology nursing is presented. The influence of nursing pioneers and others on the development of the role and the author's beliefs about nursing are cited. The relationship between nursing and other health disciplines is discussed as the unique functions of the oncology nurse are identified. In this context, the nurse is described as a facilitator of the patient and the family's physical and emotional adaptation to the illness. The requisite knowledge bases, the important data for decisions as to appropriate nursing actions, and the need for setting goals for the interventions as well as some limitations in scope are all included in the framework for practice. The process involved in establishing an independent nursing practice of oncology nursing is described. A description of the process of setting up a private practice and the problems associated with the business and financial aspects are discussed. Suggestions are made as to how referrals, billing, and record keeping can be managed. Examples of announcements, referral forms, and statements are provided. Finally, a brief history of events and some of the stresses as well as a few patient-care statistics are given as descriptors of the relative success of one venture into independent oncology nursing practice.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper presents findings from a research project on home care for children dying of cancer. Nurses coordinated the care while the parents were the principal care givers and physicians served as consultants. In one year, 27 children died at home while five reentered and died in the hospital. Nurses played a key role in this high rate of feasibility for dying at home. Their role, however, was different from the usual one of either a hospital or public health nurse. They were on call 24 hours a day and generally assisted the parents in the provision of nursing care rather than providing the care themselves. The advantages of this alternative to hospitalization are discussed.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper presents a conceptual model for the analysis and understanding of the psychosocial problems of the patient and family who are experiencing the impact of breast cancer. A diagram of the conceptual framework is provided to illustrate the interrelationships between critical event periods in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and the ensuing emotional responses of the patient and family.Ten critical event periods have been identified, including:Prodromal periodPrediagnostic periodDiagnostic periodPreoperative periodOperative periodImmediate postoperative periodExtended postoperative periodAdjuvant treatment periodRecovery periodTerminal periodSuggestions are made as to the use of the model in the systematic development of nursing interventions to meet the psychosocial needs of breast cancer patients and their families. Implications of the model for clinical and evaluative nursing research studies are discussed.
