摘要:
Scalp cooling with cryogel packs was used to try to prevent hair loss in 29 women being treated with doxorubicin hydrochloride (Adriamycin) for advanced breast carcinoma and two men being treated for carcinoid tumor. Twenty-eight of these patients tolerated the procedure well, although a minority had minor complaints, all of which were transient in nature. The new technique developed proved very successful; 22 patients had either no hair loss or only slight hair loss that did not require a wig. Biochemical impairment of liver function appeared to be the main factor in preventing success.

摘要:
Nurses who care for cancer patients who may be experiencing pain should be aware of current nursing treatment alternatives that are available to help the patient during these times. Through an international review of the literature, alternatives are identified that will help cancer nurses recognize their unique role in pain assessment and management for cancer patients. The following topics, utilizing the nursing process as the organizational framework, are included in this review: 1)the scope of the cancer pain experience; 2) nursing assessment of the patient experiencing pain related to cancer; and 3) nursing interventions, including pharmaceutical and behavioral approaches, which are utilized by nurses in the clinical setting to help the cancer patient modify his pain experience. Pertinent nursing research studies are also cited.

摘要:
This paper reports the trial use of a learning module, Developing Awareness of Attitudes, Self, and Cancer Nursing, based on previously identified nurses' needs for continuing education and nurses' perceptions of cancer patients and cancer nurses. The module was designed to meet resistance expressed by staff nurses to become more involved in cancer care, and to improve their perceptions of cancer patients and of themselves as providers of cancer care. Eighteen nurses from nine health care agencies participated in a 6-week small-group course using the module. Results of pre- and post-testing using a Port-a-Punch version of the Activity Vector Analysis, a criterion evaluation test, and subjective evaluation forms showed favorable and significant changes of attitudes toward cancer and cancer care. Responses to the experience were positive, and more widespread use of the module and/or the educational approach seems warranted.

摘要:
A review of 20 case histories of patients with hepatic artery infusion of 5-fluorouracil at UCLA led the authors to the conclusion that catheter life and patency are directly related to the patient's mastery of necessary skills for equipment maintenance and to the availability of a skilled nursing staff. The program and its objectives as it is conducted on an inpatient and outpatient level can be improved. However, since the average number of “one-to-one” teaching hours per patient was 16 hours or more, recommendations are presented based on analysis of the data required.

摘要:
A set of three media presentations was designed to increase knowledge about the procedures, side effects, and common emotional reactions of patients to radiation therapy. The media presentations are the primary component of the cognitive intervention being evaluated in a large research project comparing cognitive and affective nursing interventions for reducing stress during radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Content for the presentations was developed through extensive literature review, examination of existing materials, and consultation with radiation oncologists, nurses, and patients. Learning goals were then established for each presentation. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the media presentations in providing critical information was accomplished with an experimental study of 36 patients randomly assigned to experimental and control groups who completed an orally administered questionnaire either before or after viewing a presentation. Results showed statistically significant differences for all three presentations. The findings support the need for more patient education during radiation therapy.
