摘要:
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is rarely encountered in the normal, healthy child. However, children who are receiving immunosuppressive treatment for malignancies or organ transplants, or those who have a congenital immunodeficiency disease are at high risk for contracting this serious and often fatal infection. In this article, pneumocystis carinii pathology will be examined, with emphasis on how it presents in the immunosuppressed child. Diagnostic procedures and treatment of the infection will also be discussed. Finally, nursing implications in caring for the child with pneumocystis will be explored.

摘要:
Nursing care in a hospice is intrinsically different from that in an acute-care or rehabilitation facility. Hospices are specifically designed to help the living who are dying. This paper describes the hospice philosophy, focusing on the nursing care delivered in the home setting.

摘要:
Adolescence is a time of change and conflict as the individual seeks to find his identity and establish his independence. If the teenager also has a life-threatening illness, such as leukemia, the problems encountered are even more complicated. With guidance and support, however, these teenagers can continue the developmental tasks of adolescence. Helping these teenagers to find appropriate methods of coping and adaptation begins at the time of diagnosis. Trust is established when the adolescent receives honest, accurate information, with stress on the hopeful aspects of therapy. Support must be given as the teenager seeks appropriate ways to maintain peer acceptance. Denial must be recognized as an acceptable method of coping, particularly during periods of remission. Independence must be encouraged throughout the course of the adolescent's illness. These teenagers are living with, not dying of, cancer, and we must direct our efforts towards helping them to live with their disease and grow toward maturity.

摘要:
Many premenopausal women with breast cancer are being advised to accept adjuvant treatment with chemotherapeutic agents following radical mastectomy. These women, coping with newly diagnosed cancer and a drastic change in body image, are faced with the prospect of at least 1 year of treatments which may cause nausea, vomiting, malaise and hair loss. The preventative aspect of this treatment is seldom understood and patients may believe their disease is in a far advanced stage when this treatment is suggested.Nurses can help patients to learn about the disease and the treatments and can help them to find ways to cope with the drugs' side effects. These women require special attention to help them return to normal functioning during the extended period of their treatment.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to determine nurses' perceptions of parent participation in the care of children on pediatric oncology units. Perceptions were examined regarding the desirability and feasibility of having parents participate in care. Two groups of nurses were studied to determine if there was a difference in perception of parent participation programs between nurses involved in such programs and nurses involved in other types of pediatric oncology programs. The conclusions of this study were that: 1) nurses perceive parent participation in care as valuable in providing quality care for children in the hospital; and 2) nurses employed in parent participation oncology units scored higher on both desirability and feasibility questions than nurses on oncology units of other types. The difference in scores was significant at the 0.01 level.
