Leukotrienes are a recently discovered group of arachidonic acid‐derived lipid mediators. Using radioimmunoassay and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), we have identified the SRS‐A sulphidopeptide leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4and LTE4) in nasal washings from patients with allergic rhinitis who underwent nasal challenge with specific allergen. Smaller, but significant, amounts of LTB4were also detected. The concentrations of nasal leukotrienes were directly related to the dose of allergen, and were recovered in washings in a time‐dependent fashion after challenge. When the patients were subjected to methacholine nasal challenge on a control day, we found only negligible amounts of either the sulphidopeptide leukotrienes or LTB4. These findings support the view that LTC4, LTD4and LTE4might contribute to the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis as a result of their recognized effects on mucous hypersecretion and vasopermeability, and that the potent chemoattractant LTB4might be involved in the subsequent infiltration of inflammatory

摘要:
The genetic and immunological basis of respiratory anaphylaxis was studied in two strains of guinea pigs selectively bred for either high or low respiratory anaphylactic response to inhalation of ovalbumin. Individuals of the parental strains, Fl‐hybrids and backcross offspring were examined for class II MHC type and asthmatic response to ovalbumin. Analysis of the results revealed an association of asthma phenotype and MHC class II type. Apart from the gene(s) in the MHC several other genes seem to be involved in the control of guinea pig asthm

摘要:
Most inviable spore counts of outdoor air in Europe are based on Burkard spore trap results. For viable counts different kinds of slit samplers and Andersen sampler are used. Results of viable and inviable sampling methods are not completely comparable, but the results complete each other. Spore frequencies in outdoor air are almost equal in different Nordic countries.Cladosporiumis the most important spore type everywhere. In South Finland it accounts for ca. 85% of viable and ca. 50% inviable spore counts. The frequencies are lower in the country than in town.Cladosporiumfrequencies decrease northwards so that in Lapland the percentage is only ca. 5 and the maxima are 1/4–1/5 of those in South Finland. The frequencies ofAlternariaspores are 4–5 times lower in Nordic countries than in Middle Europe. E.g. in Turku weekly maxima have been ca. 250 spores×m−3, in the country even lower.Penicilliumaccounts for ca. 4% of all colonies in viable counts in South Finland,Botrytis2%, and yeasts also ca. 2%. The most important yeasts areCryptococcus albidus, Cr. laurentii, Sporobolomyces roseusandRhodotorulaspecies.Actinomycetesvery seldom occur on culture plates, only 0.02%

The role of storage mitesAcarus siro, Lepidoglyphus destructor,andTyrophagus putrescentiae,compared with that of cow dander, as a cause of allergic rhinitis was studied by nasal challenges in a population of 106 non‐smoking dairy farmers. Thirty‐six of the subjects were challenged with storage mites alone, each with only one of the three species in consecutive order, 43 with cow dander alone, and 27 with both. Thus mite challenges were performed on 63 farmers and cow dander challenges on 70. Challenges with any one of the storage mite species were positive in 18% and with cow dander in 20 % of farmers with allergic rhinitis. All challenges to asymptomatic farmers were negative. Five of the eight positive reactions to storage mites were due toLepidoglyphus destructor,and three toTyrophagus putrescentiae. Acarus sirowas not responsible for any of the positive reactions.
