Interaction graphs are graphical aids to plan fractional factorial experiments. A fractional factorial plan can be generated from an orthogonal array by selecting certain columns of the orthogonal array and deleting the rest. Interaction graphs are graphical aids for identifying the appropriate columns. They are most useful for planning two-level fractional factorial experiments that allow unconfounded estimation of all main effects and some specified interaction effects under the assumption that all unspecified interaction effects are negligible. Interaction graphs, unlike Taguchi's linear graphs, identify the confounding relationships associated with the fractional factorial plan. And, unlike most other methods for planning experiments that allow unconfounded estimation of all main effects and some specified interaction effects, interaction graphs do not require the knowledge of defining contrasts.

Taguchi's off-line quality control methods for product and process improvement emphasize experiments to design quality“into”products and processes. In Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit design, the application of interest here, computer modeling is invariably quicker and cheaper than physical experimentation. Our approach models quality characteristics generated by the computer simulation as functions of both the engineering and noise parameters. Thissingleexperimental design for both types of parameters typically requires far fewer runs. The model is used to predict the quality characteristics, from which loss statistics can also be predicted and optimized. In the VLSI applications described, we obtain effective prediction of product performance with comparatively few observations.

The properties of screening designs for constrained mixture experiments derived from classical two-level screening designs are investigated. A slightly modified version of the XVERT algorithm is discussed and illustrated for eight- and eleven-component examples. The technique can be implemented by hand and is shown for the eight- and eleven-component examples to yield designs with properties comparable to those of designs constructed from the set of all extreme vertices using optimal design software. Because the good properties of these screening designs appear to be due to the good properties of the classical two-level designs from which they are derived, it is concluded that designs for even larger numbers of components should also have good properties.

G. Taguchi and his school have made significant advances in the use of experimental design and analysis in industry. Of particular significance is their promotion of the use of statistical methods to achieve certain objectives in a mean response while simultaneously minimizing the variance. Unfortunately, many statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on the signal-to-noise ratio. This paper shows how the dual response approach of optimizing a“primary response”function while satisfying conditions on a“secondary response”function can be used to achieve the goals of the Taguchi philosophy within a more rigorous statistical methodology. An example illustrates this point.

Tables are given for the distribution of a statistic for testing equality of variances where the intent is to discover if one variance is an outlier. These tables extend previously published tables. There is an obvious application to process control. It has become increasingly the practice to examine the variance as well as the mean in samples taken at different time points to check on the stability of the process. These tables should be helpful to the practitioner.

Taguchi's quality loss function and his signal-to-noise ratio are reviewed for the three types of static measurable performance characteristics. For the cases of“smaller the better”and“larger the better’quality characteristics, the precise relation is derived and tabulated. For the“nominal the best”case, no exact relation could be found but a relation in inequality form is provided between the two Taguchi quality functions.

A FORTRAN program is given for evaluating the properties of the run length distribution of a Shewhart quality control chart with supplementary runs rules. The program has two parts. The first part (Part 1) of the program determines the minimal set of states and the next-state transitions for a Markov chain representation. This part is an implementation of the technique developed by the authors in an earlier paper. The results from Part 1 contain information that is necessary to obtain in the second part (Part 2) the transition matrix of the Markov chain. Part 1 can be used for any type of Shewhart chart that has been supplemented with runs rules, whereas Part 2 is only applicable to the ShewhartX̄chart. Part 2 uses the results from Part 1 to obtain the cumulative distribution function of the run length, the average run length, and the standard deviation of the run length for a specified standardized shift in the mean.
