摘要:
Through the use of several examples, the case is made for using graphical representations of time sequenced data in order to insure that the forecaster makes full use of intuition as well as supplementary knowledge about the process in question. Among several possible devices, minicomputer-calculator graphs illustrate the effects on several sets of data when (1) various transformations of the original data are proposed; (2) seasonal adjustments are considered; (3) exponential smoothing is introduced; and (4) forecasting into the future is undertaken. The paper is intended as an expository article on forecasting and smoothing procedures.

摘要:
Two production models are presented for maintaining current control of an industrial process under the surveillance of annp-control chart. The formulated cost function includes the cost of maintaining annp-control chart, search for the assignable cause, downtime, higher rate of defective items, and repair. Two models are formulated. The first model assumes that the process is not allowed to continue in operation during the search for the assignable cause. The second assumes that the process is allowed to continue in operation during the search for the assignable cause. A simple search procedure is developed for determining the optimal parameters of annp-control chart that minimize the cost function. Illustrative examples show how the formulated models can be applied.

摘要:
The existing methodology for treating certain kinds of quality control data assumes the existence of normality and independence in the data. Under these conditions the data can be treated simply through the use of available tables and simple calculations.When either independence and/or normality are not present, as is usually the case, application of the existing methodology introduces large errors in the analysis of the data and renders conclusions based on them dubious.This paper modifies and extends the existing standard methodology by utilizing the time series analysis approach and by introducing dependence via a second order autoregressive process (AR(2) Model). Curves of the modified auxiliary quality control factors are presented, showing the substantial effect of dependence on the classical quality control factors.

The techniques of statistical data analysis, mathematical model building, and digital computer simulation have been discussed separately in the literature. However, collective application of these techniques for solving an industrial problem is not often published. This paper demonstrates how the three techniques were used collectively to study a strip-coiling temperature-control problem at Inland Steel Company's 80”hot strip mill.
