AbstractMössbauer effect and electrical resistivity measurements were undertaken on Fe571.11Te. The Mössbauer studies show a magnetic ordering at 68°K, which is identified with the antiferromagnetic transition previously reported for this phase. Comparison of the room and liquid helium temperature spectra indicate that the antiferromagnetic axis lies in the tetragonal plane. AbstractThe near ultraviolet absorption spectrum of toluene‐d8has been recorded with the help of a E1large quartz spectrograph. The (O,O) band has been identified at 37672 cm−1. The spectrum has been analysed with the help of the excited state fundamentals 282, 378, 431, 454, 508, 700, 926, 1150 and 1432 cm−1. These frequencies have been correlated with the corresponding frequencies of the normal molecule. AbstractA method is described for the determination of chloride in compounds and in solutions of high bromide to chloride molar ratios (up to 6300:1). Solutions were boiled briefly with nitric acid to oxidize the bulk concentration of bromide ion to bromine gas which was then flushed with air. Chloride ion was titrated potentiometrically with silver nitrate in 80% i‐propanol‐water medium using a silver‐silver bromide indicator electrode and a chloride‐free reference electrode. AbstractAn approach to quantitative nephelometric measurements using a spectrofluorometer is presented. The measurements are performed with the aid of a monochromatic filter, which is transparent for the line 546 nm and by adjusting the monochromator for the same wavelength. The method was applied for the determination of micro amounts of: (1) sulphate as barium sulphate in colorless or colored aqueous solutions, in phosphoric acid, in the presence of large amounts of iron and in ores; is also suitable for determination of total inorganic sulfur after oxidation to sulphate and in organics after combustion; (2) calcium as calcium naphthalhydroxamate in aqueous and phosphoric acid solutions; and (3) calcium in the presence of large amounts of magnesium. The proposed technique has proved useful for quantitative nephelometric determinations in colored solutions. The high sensitivity also permits the use of micro samples.

AbstractA rapid method for removing free ferric oxides from soil clays with sodium dithionite solution buffered with sodium bicarbonate solution is described. Effective dispersion of the clay suspension during this extraction procedure is achieved by means of ultrasonic agitation. Methods are proposed for the determination of silica and alumina in the dithionite extract which are more reliable than those previously employed. Kaolinite and micaceous clay minerals are unaffected by the treatment but certain chloritic minerals appear to be susceptible to attack.
