We consider the problem of individual route guidance in an Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS ) environment, based on time-dependent forecasts of link travel time. We propose a consistency condition which deterministic forecasts should be constrained to satisfy, and show that under consistency, the time-dependent fastest path can be calculated with exactly the same computational complexity as for static fastest paths, regardless of the time index set. In particular, consistency reduces computational complexity byO(T)in a T-period discrete time problem. We also comment on the stochastic fastest path problem, suggesting modifications to a general-case algorithm from the literature.

Intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS) have the potential to manage non-recurring congestion due to incidents and recurring congestion due to capacity shortfall more effectively than current operational systems. IVHS will provide information to the traveler, both in the vehicle and at home, business, and at commercial and recreational facilities, to help in the selection of more optimal travel modes and routes. The collected data can also be used to build a historical base and support required statistical reporting to appropriate agencies. The process of designing and evaluating an architecture that supports IVHS begins by obtaining and understanding requirements. These are usually obtained from the customer (who can be a local, state, or federal transportation agency or a private sector company or individual), or from a combination of customers, users, service providers, and others who are affected in a major way by the architecture. Scenarios, defining the conditions and constraints under which the IVHS architecture operates, are used with models to assess the benefits of candidate solutions for performance and life-cycle cost. Some measures of merit (MoMs), such as “average time to clear an incident” or “average vehicle speed at rush hour,” are selected to provide quantitative measures and comparisons of the benefits from alternative architectures. Others, such as evaluation of institutional, political, and risk issues, are qualitative in nature. MoMs should encompass the entire spectrum of requirements and major characteristics desired of the architecture. Additional factors used to help assess architecture performance and eventual acceptability are the results of demonstration programs that evaluate specific components of an architecture. The approach with the greatest benefit-to-cost ratio that does not conflict with the constraints derived from the qualitative assessment factors is generally selected for implementation.

摘要:
NHK has developed an FM multiplex broadcasting system using a new digital modulation method called level controlled minimum shift keying (L-MSK) which is a kind of MSK. This system is multipath-proof, and has a transmission capacity of 16 kbps. Moreover, it has a compatibility with radio data system (RDS) because they use different frequency bands. Transmission tests were carried out to measure the performance of the 16 kbps L-MSK system in the service area of the NHK Tokyo FM station. These tests revealed that this system was superior to RDS in terms of the correct reception rates obtained in mobility. FM multiplex broadcasting using L-MSK has many merits for traffic information services.

The most critical element of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) will be the communication system that links the highway infrastructure and mobile vehicles. Not only must it be designed to allow users who purchase systems in one city to travel or permanently move to another, but also it must support robust, relatively high-capacity data communications, at least in the infrastructure-to-vehicle (ITV) direction, and have a cost that is in balance with the perceived benefits that the overall IVHS system provides to users.

摘要:
The accomplishments to date on the experimental evaluation of Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS) technology for highway automation in the California PATH (Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways) Program are summarized. The AVCS activities at PATH can be divided into two groups: longitudinal vehicle control and lateral vehicle control. The paper describes each of the activities with a concentration on experimental results achieved to date. The experimental setups and results are presented, followed by near-term plans for further work.
