The unique biological behaviour of the mammalian placenta has wide implications in transplantation, and tumour, immunology. Immunological influences in trophoblastic proliferation have been sought, in experimental animals, by the investigation of normal and ectopic trophoblast development, and, in man, by studies of normal placental development, and of the clinical and epidemiological behaviour of trophoblastic tumours.

In a study of amnioscopy at Tsan Yuk Hospital, Hong Kong, labour commenced within 24 hours in I00 among 637 cases (15. 7 per cent). Cases with a maturity of 42 weeks or more and multiparae with parity of I ‐ 4 were significantly more prone to stimulation of onset of labour. This article presents a detail histopathological study of secundines from 70 patients with premature rupture of the membranes and from 32 patients in whom the membranes ruptured during labour. Inflammatory reactions of varying degrees from mild, moderate to severe were found both in the control and study groups. But there was a higher incidence of inflammatory changes in the study group than in the control group. Moreover the inflammatory changes in the study group were more intense particulary when there were gross evidence of roughnened and meconium stained secundines. In this study, one case of placenta bipartita, one case of congenital anomaly of the umbilical vessels one placenta with retroplacental clots were detected.

Semilongitudinal observations on fasting blood sugar, total lipids, cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides, non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and lipoproteins were carried out on 116 women taking Combination type oral contraceptive drugs for 3 to 42 cycles. The changes observed differed with each constituent. Total lipids showed significant increase throughout the period of observation. Cholesterol and phospholipids showed significant increases after about 12 cycles of administration whereas triglycerides showed an increase after 6 cycles of medication. NEFA showed significant decrease in the 1st to 3rd cycles. The alpha and beta lipoproteins ratios showed significant changes after 13‐24 cycles of treatment. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were carried out in women taking two types of oestrogen‐progestogen combination oral contraceptives. Each subject had the test done on day 18‐21 in a control cycle before the medication was started and three consecutive cycles during administration of the drug. Fasting blood glucose levels and K values showed no significant changes with combination of megesterol acetate (4 mgm.) with 0.05 mgm. of ethinyl oestradiol. A significant decline in glucose tolerance was observed by the change in K values during all the three cycles of medication with combination of Lynestrenol 2.5 mgms. with 0.075 mgm. of mestranol. A case report of a patient with dysgerminoma treated by unilateral salphingo‐oophorectomy is presented, A term pregnancy occurred with spontaneous delivery of a normal infant.
