ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the socio‐demographic characteristics and reproductive profiles of women seeking induced and incomplete abortions in India and East Asia (Thailand, South Korea, The Philippines, and Indonesia). From January 1971 through December 1974, data were collected on 10,402 cases from India and 5,874 cases from East Asia. Of the cases studied in India, 94.5 percent were induced abortions. In East Asia 80.0 percent were incomplete abortions.The majority of the women were from 20 to 29 years of age both in India and East Asia. The mean parity was between two and three for both the groups. The educational status of the women in India and East Asia were not high. Their husbands had a higher level of education. The proportion of women gainfully employed was higher in East Asia.The proportion of women with high fertility was higher for induced abortion cases than for incomplete abortion cases, both in India and East Asia. Extension of the child‐bearing period by ten years increased the already high mean pregnancies by at least two pregnancies — the effect being more pronounced in East Asia. Women of high fertility had a significantly higher child loss rate. Induced abortion had a negative effect on fertility.In this study a significant majority of women of parity one to three wanted to limit their family size to three children. SUMMARYA case of scar dehiscence involving the whole of the anterior vaginal wall following a vaginal hysterectomy and anterior colporrhaphy is described.Mrs. E. E., aged 63, attended the gynaecological clinic complaining of a prolapse causing quite a lot of discomfort. Frequency of micturition and slight urge incontinence were present, but no stress incontinence. The menopause had occurred at the age of 43 years. There had been no vaginal bleeding since.

SUMMARYThe combination of 0.75 mg lynestre‐nol and 0.0375 mg ethinyl estradiol was administered to 100 women for a total of 998 cycles. There were no pregnancies.In the first treatment cycle, breakthrough bleeding and/or spotting occurred in 24% of cases, but this decreased rapidly to less than 5% after the third cycle. The incidence of “missed period” was 17% in the first cycle but decreased to less than 10% after the second. During the first cycle mild nausea occurred in 16% of the women but again this dropped sharply after the second cycle. The pereentage of other side effects was remarkably low. Clinical study with this low dose combination indicates that it is as effective as the traditional dose combination and for metabolic reasons, therefore, it is the method to be pref

A case report of hydrops fetalis caused by hemoglobin Barts is presented. An antepartum diagnosis of this fetal anomaly can be established by the sonographic and amniographic findings of frog belly and bulky placenta. However, sonography is safer and easier than amniography for this purpose.

ABSTRACTThis article presents a detailed study of menstrual pattern in nulliparous and parous women. Mean age of menarche in the two groups was comparable (14.45 years and 14.5 years respectively). Menstrual cycle length within the range of physiological normal limits was found in 69.4% of nulliparous and 76.6% of parous women. Menorrhagia was more frequent in nulliparous girls, 40.7% Vs 8.7% in parous women. Incidence of dysmenorr‐hoea showed a wide variation in the two groups (70.6% Vs. 29.1%). In nulliparous girls, dysmenorrhoea was of spasmodic type while in the parous group it was mainly congestive in nature. There is a need for investigating these young girls with history of scanty or excessive flow and dysmenorrhoea for latent genital tuberculos
