ABSTRACT:This paper examines the pattern of word stress in Nigerian Standard English. It shows that stress assignment is different in Nigerian Standard English compared to British Standard English. This paper claims that the major reason for this difference is a phenomenon called progressive stress shift.

ABSTRACT:This paper examines the notion ‘Nigerian English,’ using examples drawn from the novels of two prominent Nigerian authors, Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe. With particular emphasis on the polylectal speech situation in Nigeria, Nigerian English is discussed under three main headings: basilect, mesolect and acrolect. It is argued that notions of ‘inappropriateness’ are inadequate to explain Nigerian English. It is suggested that an analysis of the use of Nigerian English, especially in literary contexts, can provide deep insight into the principles underlying the linguistic behavior of Nigerians. This analysis can best be conducted within the frameworks of sociolinguistics and social psychology. The examples analyzed in the novels also illustrate specific types of linguistic behavior among Nigerian users of the English language, such as translating directly from Nigerian languages, obeying the principles of least effort and economy of expression, subjecting English language forms and norms to the socio‐cultural logic and imperatives of the Nigerian environment, and displaying ‘hypercorrected behavior’ towards the norms and code of the native speak

ABSTRACT:This paper examines from a functional perspective some aspects of the lexical style of Indian newspaper English, which approximates normal Indian English (1E) communication, and explores the dynamics of nativization of the English language in India. This is done in terms of the nodal concept of ‘contraints’–socio‐cultural and linguistic–under which the language functions, and indeed gains its functional viability in IE communication. Significantly, this study of the strategies commonly used to overcome these ‘constraints’–borrowings of native lexical items and replenishment of the lexis of the language through semantic shifts–not only brings out their relative functional value that essentially characterizes IE, but also shows how their distinctive choice pattern underlies the crucial efficacy of the nativized language (IE). ABSTRACT:This paper is based on a doctoral thesis, The phonological influence of English upon Yoruba, prepared at the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics, University College London. Extensive fieldwork was carried out in Nigeria and London, at the end of which a large corpus of English loanwords was compiled. Subjects for the investigation were carefully selected to include a monolingual control group whose usage of loans cannot be attributed to code‐switching. The limits of the areas of phonological influence of English on Yoruba are shown, and these influences, how they were introduced into the language, and their subsequent diffusion into the phonological system, are described. For each influence, an attempt is made to detail phonetic/linguistic motivations where they exist. ABSTRACT:This study seeks to demonstrate that a certain type of new speech is developing among the students of the University of Yaoundé. It examines the linguistic processes of word formation and the meanings expressed by these linguistic innovations. This investigation reveals that for most of the time the meaning of these words is highly metaphorical, playful and hermetic as words come from a variety of sources and are reassigned different meanings or given a refreshing slant. The resurgence of such a variety of speech cuts outsiders off as users distort the forms of the words, coin colourful expressions, blend words from two or three different sources, and articulate them in a certain jocular manner. This usage is a highly coded one, so that only insiders can really be at home with it. In fact this slang, being impenetrable by outsiders, gives the users a certain sense of security and a certain measure of entertainment which animates their difficult conditions of life where success is a constant battle to achieve
