摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper presents an analysis of tense and aspect variation in the news discourse of Nepali English. It takes the position that institutionalized non‐native varieties of English employ local norms of usage which are available for linguistic analysis. Nepali English news‐stories employ the pluperfect in some cases where NaE would use simple past. This pluperfect is used for backgrounding, interacting with other forms to provide textual coherence. It is bound to the news text's relevance structure, and signals information which is low in importance to the major topic of the article. ABSTRACT:Television and print media during the 1991 Gulf War exposed the English‐speaking world to word‐formation patterns that produced neologisms and analogical forms. The language of the military briefing room became the language of media reportage. Established patterns were employed to create new forms with new meanings. The data are taken from the television and print media in the USA. ABSTRACT:This paper studies the use of two codes in Hong Kong written media. A wide range of materials, including textbooks, magazines and popular entertainment books, were examined to determine the extent of the use of English in Chinese written texts. It is claimed that English is widely used in texts dealing with topics on technology and business, and reasons are suggested to explain this phenomenon.

ABSTRACT:This paper provides a description of the pragmatics of language use in Egyptian English newspaper editorials. Editorials are defined as ‘acts of passing judgement’, and Searle's (1976) taxonomy of illocutionary acts is used to compare editorials from Egyptian English, American English, and Egyptian Arabic newspapers. The results show that Egyptian English conforms neither to the American English nor to Egyptian Arabic patterns with regard to the use of representatives and declaratives. It uses more declaratives and fewer representatives than American English, but fewer declaratives and more representatives than Egyptian Arabic. Qualitative as well as quantitative differences in the usage of the illocutionary acts are discussed, and it is hypothesized that American English places more emphasis on Grice's (1975) maxim of quality, while Egyptian English places more emphasis on the maxim of quant

ABSTRACT:The urge to label others is a universal phenomenon that is attested in all of the world's languages. South African English, a transplanted language according to Kachru (1990), distinguishes itself from other varieties of English through its unique ethnic labeling terminology. Throughout South African history, the indigenous peoples received a good number of labels, most of which were derogatory in nature ‐ always denoting the superiority of the whites who were doing the labeling. Among others, the terms include Non‐White, Non‐European, Native, Bantu, Hottentot, Bushmen, Coloured, Plural, and so on. It should be noted that the indigenous peoples already had a system of labeling terms that they used to self‐identify as ethnic groups, namely Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, Tswana, Khoikhoi, San and more.British colonial rule as well as the system of Apartheid, which is based on racial segregation, led to the institutionalization of many of these terms, for example, Native, Non‐European, Coloured, Plural, etc. However, political and social developments originating from constant protests by the oppressed, as well as reactions from the government, affected the semantic connotations of some of these terms as well as the creation of new ones. The semantic shifts involved a redefinition of some of the existing terminology ‐ such as Black ‐ from color connotations to political connotations. Other meaning shifts ranged from the melioration (acquiring good value judgements) to the pejoration (acquiring bad value judgements) of some of the terms.This paper focuses on the socio‐political factors that are leading to the shifts in connotation in the post‐Apartheid system by examining the consequences of those shifts for the English lexico

ABSTRACT:It has been recognized (e.g. Kachru, 1988) that it is time for a paradigm shift which takes into account the changing roles and functions of English around the world to occur in linguistic research and language pedagogy. Possible explanations for the relatively slow infusion of this paradigm into TESOL preparatory programs are presented.This paper also explores structural impediments to curriculum design and teaching practices which incorporate a World Englishes perspective. These impediments include student background schemata; text availability and level of difficulty; supporting material availability; e.g. library journal and audio‐visual holdings; and availability of workshops and short‐term coursework for individuals who have not taught a World Englishes course before.Eight recommendations are made to promote the incorporation of a World Englishes perspective within TESOL Methods courses and within the broader language education commun

ABSTRACT:This paper examines the political, sociocultural and economic factors governing the teaching of English in Singapore. It reviews the changes which took place in the last ten years, showing how these changes were brought about through deliberate measures on the part of the government in conjunction with the free choice of the people themselves. Special attention is given to the ambivalent attitude of both the government and its people towards the increasing dominance of English in the island state. Whilst the government is anxious to promote the use of English to support commercial and technological developments for economic success, it is at the same time concerned about the effects of Westernization which may ultimately undermine the country's economic growth. Similarly whilst the people have, for pragmatic reasons, chosen English education for their children, they are concerned about the falling standard of Chinese in the society. This paper also studies the effects of the bilingual or bi‐literacy policy in Singapore's education system and its impact on inculcating Asian cultural value

ABSTRACT:Despite the current extensive research on many variables associated with English language testing, little attention has been focused on the inherent variability in the linguistic ‘norms’ for Standard English that are generally tested. This paper examines data from domains of Standard English in several native‐speaker (e.g. British) and non‐native (e.g. Malaysian) varieties of English, focusing on linguistic and attitudinal factors leading to changes in these norms. It then discusses implications of these changes for test construction aimed at assessing proficiency in English as a global language, particularly through such standardized instruments as the Test of English for International Communication
