Weekly group sessions in social and life skills were offered to a class of physically handicapped school leavers. It is generally acknowledged that interdisciplinary collaboration is essential in the management of children with special educational needs. Ways in which professionals may be prepared for this responsibility have not received much consideration. This article is the first in the Supplement to report a project at the undergraduate stage, for two professions: teachers and speech therapists. Dr Beryl Smith, an educational psychologist, teaches at Westhill College; Dr Rachel David, a speech therapist, teaches on the speech therapy course at the City of Birmingham Polytechnic.

Kim Jeffries studied psychology at The City University. She now teaches at Welsh House Farm School in Birmingham. Tim Pring was a teacher in special education. He now lectures in psychology at the Centre for Clinical Communication Studies at The City University. The authors describe a teaching programme to improve a handicapped pupil's graphic and visual perceptual skills. They provide also an example of the evaluation of results with a single subject, thus taking up a theme in the article by Hancock and Alston in the prior number of the Supplement.
