Case histories are considered which indicate that under some field conditions a thaw interface proceeds as predicted by a simple model. Some reasons for possible deviations are investigated and comparisons are made between calculated and measured rates of thaw.

摘要:
When a freezing front advances through a saturated soil water may either be expelled or attracted to the freezing front depending upon soil type, stress level, and rate of freezing. Experimental evidence is considered which shows that coarse-grained sandy soils expel water under most conditions while fine grained soils can be made to expel water only at higher overburden pressures. A solution for the excess pore pressures that can be generated due to impeded drainage by pore water expulsion in an open system is presented.

A new method is described by which the total lateral stress in cohesive soils can be measured. When used in combination with pore pressure measurements, the lateral effective stress, the stress change, and the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest,K0, can be calculated. The basic concept of the earth pressure cell and its installation, as described in this report, are simple.

摘要:
The upper bound technique of limit analysis has been found to be very successful in analyzing the stability of cuttings in normally consolidated clays. However, most soils in their natural states exhibit some anisotropy with respect to shear strength, and some nonhomogeneity with respect to depth. It is difficult to obtain the solution based on the classical limit equilibrium analysis with the assumed noncircular failure plane with such soil properties included. This paper establishes an expression for the stability factorNs, based on the upper bound technique of limit analysis which yields a close-formed solution for sections in which the following conditions are considered: (a) log-spiral failure-plane, through and below toe; (b) non-homogeneity; (c) anisotropy; and (d) general slope.

摘要:
A preliminary investigation has been conducted to explore the potential utilization of neutron radiography for thein vitroexamination of soils contained within sampling tubes. Radiographic images obtained by such means have been found to provide indications of changes in soil type and details of soil structure which are distinct from images obtained by conventional X-ray radiographic means.
