A number of load tests carried out on drilled cast-in-place concrete caissons are described, along with some pertinent geo-technical properties of the glacial till overburden and shale bedrock. Both the till and the shale deteriorated rapidly under the combined effects of exposure by excavation and action of groundwater seepage. The unusual features of the project were that straight shaft caissons were used in such conditions, and that they were designed for side shear only.

In Part I,* based on experimental evidence, the existence of a potential function to define the gradient of the plastic strain increment vector was proved. The study is continued in Part II by defining the term yielding, a discussion of the form of the yield loci and a presentation of the “flow rule.”

Ice lenses in natural soil are normally formed in a thermal gradient regime, and this permits the development of an undulating frost line if a range of pore sizes exists. Evidence is presented that suggests that the undulating nature of the ice-water interface permits the ice lens to form over the smaller pores of the system. Although fractions with only a limited particle size range have been studied, the results support the use of particle size as a valid basis for assessing frost susceptibility.
