摘要:
The post-peak stress-strain behaviour in undrained shear of three different clays has been investigated by using an indirect method. This method, which is in principle similar to that used by Kallstenius (1963), consists in first compressing a clay specimen to a given post-peak strain between two parallel platens and subsequently determining its current remoulded strength by the laboratory vane method. By a repeated compression procedure, axial strains of up to 200 per cent have been attained. As the three clays tested differed widely in sensitivity, a comparison of their post-peak behaviour made clearly apparent the effect of structural breakdown on the reserve shear strength at large strains.

摘要:
This paper presents a study of a number of unusual abutment movements that have occurred at seven underpass structures on the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway between Cornwall and the Quebec border. The locations of these structures are shown in Figure 1. The movements were of such magnitude at three of the structures that extensive repair work has been necessary. An explanation for these unusual abutment movements is presented. Remedial measures are suggested and measures are outlined to avoid the occurrence of such movements in areas where comparable subsoil and loading conditions would prevail.

摘要:
A deep, steel sheet piled, figure-eight cofferdam with circular steel wales was installed as a temporary substructure during the construction of the City of Ottawa Pollution Control Centre Project. A program of strain monitoring was developed and carried out and the results, including inferred soil pressures, are presented.
