AbstractAs part of a prospective study of the development of eating symptomatology, adolescent girls completed measures of eating attitudes and self‐esteem. At two‐year follow‐up, the predictive validity of those measures was tested. Abnormal eating attitudes at baseline predicted both unhealthy eating attitudes and partial syndrome eating disorder (PSED) at follow‐up. Poor self‐esteem at baseline predicted unhealthy eating attitudes, but was not significantly associated with PSED. The results suggest that measures of both eating attitudes and self‐esteem have potential value as screening instruments for subsequent eating problems, assisting in targeting intervention at an

AbstractThe role of psychological and other factors in the treatment of obesity were examined in a community‐based slimming group, where some regular attenders appeared not to be benefiting from the six‐week weight‐loss programme. Forty‐seven women, a significant number of whom were of normal weight, completed psychometric tests assessing variables such as mood, binge eating, and nutritional knowledge. Weight changes were recorded over the course of the programme and at one year follow‐up. Subjects showed statistically significant but limited weightloss over the programme. Most however regained much of the weight over the subsequent year, with high levels of anxiety and binge eating the predominant psychological features of the least successful subjects. The efficacy of conventional dietetic practice, especially for those with mood and/or binge eating problems, is questioned. AbstractDespite a substantial body of research over the last two decades the nature and role of body‐image distortion in the variety of eating disorders is unclear. The purpose of the present paper is to review the evidence and largely on the basis of more recent work to suggest a reconceptualization of the problem.Five sets of studies/observations, which are described in this paper, have led us to the following formulation: individuals suffering from either anorexia or bulimia nervosa do not have a fixed and implacable distorted image of their own bodies, but rather have an ‘uncertain, unstable and weak body‐image’, and that in making size estimation judgements they err on the side of caution and in consequence exhibit a bias towards overestimation of body size. It is further proposed that this judgemental bias is primarily influenced by social and cultural factors. The therapeutic implications of this reconceptualization are briefly high

AbstractOverviewing the history of self‐starvation, extreme fasting may be found in three different forms: a miracle, a spectacle, an illness. Referring to different contexts of interpretation, the transition from sainthood to patienthood suggests a discontinuous pattern in the history of self‐starvation.
