Superbase-promoted chalcogenation of diverse electrophilic reagents with the chalcogens or their anions in multiphase superbase systems became possible owing to the fact that under the action of a very strong hard base such as the “naked” hydroxide ion the elemental chalcogens produce softer and more nucleophilic species which successfully compete for the electrophiles. This explains the paradox that electrophiles such as acetylene, vinylacetylene, phenylacetylene, diacetylene and organo halides, in the presence of strong bases prefer to react with the chalcogens or their anions rather than with the activated hydroxide ion. Ignorance of this fundamental fact for a long time hindered progress in the application of chalcogens for the direct synthesis of their organic derivatives.

The present review deals with the application of sulfenic [RS-OH] and sulfoxylic [HO-S-OH] acid derivatives in electrophilic addition reactions. We consider a new method for generation of reactive electrophilic sulfenylating species from sulfenic/sulfoxylic acid derivatives and sulfur trioxide (or its complexes). Thisautoreviewcovers our results in the systematic study of SO3-mediated addition to olefins and of sulfenylation of olefins with these novel electrophiles. The reactions of disulfides, sulfenyl chlorides, sulfenamides, alkyl sulfenates, aminosulfenyl halides and thiobisamines with a wide range of unsaturated compounds are discussed. A special chapter concerns the acid-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution of the products obtained.

This review details all types of reactions for the synthesis of 1,2,4,6-thiatriazines and gives a complete discussion of all known crystal and molecular structures of thiatriazines. A few examples of reactions with unknown pathways are given. A CAS ONLINE search is the basis of this nearly complete literature survey, including thiaadamantanes and some results concerning the bioactivity of thiatriazines.

The CA retrievable information on the thio-, seleno-, and telluroketene substructures (1967 through mid-1991), together with pre-1967 and additional post-1967 information retrieved from reviews and handbooks of organic chemistry, is listed in this paper. This annotated data sheet mentions 335 compounds (systematized in 14 Tables) and 363 refrences including 19 reviews (Ref. 16,33,45,46,75–77,103, 107, 156, 158, 161, 165, 166, 179, 224–226, 363) and thus attempts to present a complete list of title compounds, including radicals and ions as well as chemical entities only appearing as hypothetical intermediates. Polymers, dimers, and compound mixtures are not included.
