Summary. The herbicidal activity of MCPA and MCPB was compared using three species of unicellular algae grown in liquid mineral salt medium. MCPB inhibited growth, respiration and phosphate uptake to a greater degree than MCPA and appears to be inherently toxic at concentrations of at least 2·5 × 10−4M. The enhanced activity of MCPB coincided with more efficient absorption. Uptake of both compounds appears to be optimal at pH conditions favouring movement as the undissociated molecule.

Summary.Investigations of the mode of action of 2‐amino‐3‐chloro‐1, 4‐naphtho‐quinone (ACNQ.), a potential herbicide for transplanted paddy rice (Oryza sativaL.), have been continued, with special reference to the interaction between chemical activity and the degree of submergence of seedlings. In laboratory experiments with rice, seedlings were only killed if totally submerged in ACNQ, solution. If the shoot tip was above the surface at the start of treatment, or emerged after 24–48 hr, growth was little affected. The emerged part of the shoot appears to inhibit the action of the chemical on the submerged parts. To kill germinating seeds, exposure for 1–7 days was needed, depending on concentration, but at least 7 days submergence was required by seedlings with shoots 2–8 cm long. It is suggested that ACNQ, either penetrates slowly or is unstable after penetration.ACNQ could only be detected from those parts of the plant in direct contact with the solution, suggesting that no translocation occurred. There was a considerable reduction in ACNQ concentration in solutions containing rice seedlings, but there was no corresponding accumulation within the seedlings themselves.Activity herbicide de la 2‐amino‐3‐chloro‐1,4‐naphtoquinone. II.

Summary. The rates of degradation of three triazine and two uracil herbicides were followed at 13·2 and 31·2°C in one soil. Soil was treated with 8 ppm of 2‐chloro‐4‐ethyl‐amino‐6‐isopropylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine (atrazine), 2‐chloro‐4,6‐bisethylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine (simazine), 2‐mcthylthio‐4‐ethylamino‐6‐isopropylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine (ametryne), 3‐sec‐butyl‐5‐bromo‐6‐methyluracil (bromacil) and 3‐tert‐butyl‐5‐chloro‐6‐methyluracil (terbacil) and monthly samples analysed chemically to determine the amounts remaining. Evaluation of the rate constant at two temperatures permitted calculation of the energy of activation from the Arrhenius equation. It was determined to a first approximation that soil degradation followed a first order rate law with no lag period and that the rate could be related to molecular structure. The energies of activation in kcals/mole were: atrazine 10‐8, simazine 9‐2, ametryne 6‐1, bromacil 3‐0, and terbacil 6‐1. These values suggest breakage of the common carbon‐chlorine bond in atrazine and simazine but breakage of a different bond in ametryne. Examination of bond energies and known mechanisms of breakdown for triazines supported the hypothesis of breakage of the bond at the two position. The data on decomposition of the uracils indicate that the carbon‐halogen bond was broken in each molecule.Dégradation des triazines et des uraciles herbicides dans le solRésumé.
Summary. The influence of light, potassium nitrate and temperature on the germination of two samples of black seeds ofChenopodium albianL. was investigated. At constant temperature (23°C), light and nitrate together promoted germination of the younger (8–11‐month‐old) seed, which was insensitive to cither factor applied separately. Germination of older (32–35‐month‐old) seed was increased by both light and nitrate applied either separately or together, but there was no consistent interaction. While the older seed was generally indifferent to light, germination of the younger seed treated with nitrate was greatly promoted by relatively short periods of white light. Four minutes of light 36 hr after the initial moistening was as effective as 16 min and almost as effective as daily light exposure, in promoting germination of the younger seed. Long photoperiods slightly inhibited germination as compared with short photoperiods.Sensitivity of the younger seed to light varied with nitrate concentration, temperature, duration of imbibition in the dark prior to exposure, and time of nitrate application. Alternating temperatures (10–30°C daily) increased the sensitivity to light and to nitrate given either separately or together. Drying the younger seed for short periods after treatment with light and nitrate did not influence the response to either factor.
Summary. Some characteristics of the interaction of paraquat with a dioctahedral montmorillonite have been studied by a combination of adsorption, radioisotope exchange, and X‐ray diffraction techniques. The clay exhibited a high affinity for paraquat, since when less than 50 me/100 g were absorbed no paraquat was detected in the solution (<0·07 ppm), irrespective of the saturating cation, and in the presence or absence of 3·5 M ammonium nitrate solution. Interlamellar adsorption of paraquat was detected by the occurrence, even in an aqueous environment, of the 12·6 A c‐spacing associated with the adsorption of pyridinium ions. When14C‐labelled paraquat was added to a clay containing less than 50 me/100 g of adsorbed paraquat, complete self‐exchange was observed within 24 hr. Therefore at all levels of adsorption, paraquat held in the adsorbed phase must be in equilibrium with a solution concentration.

Summary. The degradation of paraquat dichloride in soil byLipomyces starkeyiLod. and Rij, was investigated spectrophotometrically and by14C‐labelled carbon dioxide emission. Breakdown occurred within the first 96 hr of incubation in cultures of soil of high organic content. Adsorption isotherms showed that soils rich in organic matter had a greater total adsorption of paraquat from solutions of concentration in excess of 250 ppm. Soil high in organic matter was fractionated by ultrasonic disintegration into its organic and inorganic components. Paraquat degradation occurred in cultures containing the former but not the latter. Slow transfer of14C‐labelled paraquat adsorbed on the organic components was shown to take place through a dialysis membrane to the much stronger adsorption sites on the inorganic components placed outside the membrane. It appears that decomposition of paraquat in soil byL. starkeyioccurs while the herbicide is weakly adsorbed on the organic soil components. Over a period of time (96 hr in one instance), slow transfer to the inorganic soil components rendered the paraquat unavailable for microbial degradation.

Summary. The absorption, translocation and metabolism of the herbicide dichlobenil (2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile) in seedlings of wheat (Triticum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa) was investigated using a14C‐labelled preparation. Both plants absorbed the herbicide from water solutions through the roots and translocated it to the shoots. Accumulation was greater in the roots of rice.In wheat, dichlobenil was hydroxylated to form both 3‐hydroxy‐2,6‐dichlorobenzo‐nitrile and in smaller quantities, the 4‐hydroxy analogue. These conversion products were present mainly as soluble and insoluble conjugates. The insoluble fraction, which apparently consists of phenols conjugated with plant polymers, increased with time. Though the same metabolic processes occurred in rice, the conversion rate was considerably lower. Correspondingly, the dichlobenil concentration was greater in rice than in wheat. No evidence of hydrolysis of dichlobenil was obtained.

Summary. A study was made of the breakdown of14C‐dichlobenil (2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile) added at 2 ppm to a sandy soil containing 4% organic matter. After 8 months more than half the added herbicide had been metabolized. The major conversion product was 2,6‐dichlorobenzamide (95% of total metabolites). Three minor metabolites (each about 1%) were found but could not be identified. The hydrolysis to 2,6‐dichlorobenzamide appears to be a microbiological process. The great stability of the major metabolite was confirmed in a separate experiment in which14C‐2,6‐dichlorobenzamide was added to the soil at 2 ppm. After 6 months about 90% of the added 2,6‐dichlorobenzamide was recovered.Métabolisme du dichlobenil en sol sableuxRésumé.
