Summary:The patterns of absorption and translocation of14C clopyralid commercially formulated as the acid, monoethanolamine salt, potassium salt, 2‐ethylhexyl ester and 1 ‐decyl ester were compared inCirsium arvenseandPolygonum convolvulusgrown under three environmental regimes. Plants were grown under a 35% or 65% RH regime in silica sand maintained at 33% w/w moisture or under a water stress regime at 65% RH. Approxi mately 26,39,86,93 and 100% of the applied14C‐activity from the 2‐ethylhexyl ester, acid, monoethanolamine salt, 1‐decyl ester and potas sium salt, respectively, were recovered 72 h after application to glass cover slips placed in the growth room. However, loss of applied14C‐activity after application of the five formulations to both plant species was significant only for the 2‐ethylhexyl ester. Regardless of environmental regime, the acid was the most readily absorbed formulation. In contrast to the acid, the salts and esters were less readily absorbed. When the data were expressed as a percentage of absorbed radioactivity, there was no significant difference in translocation when the acid, monoethanolamine salt and potassium salt were compared. However, significantly smaller quantities of the absorbed 2‐ethylhexyl and 1‐decyl ester were exported from the treated leaf. These results indicate that once absorbed, the esters do not readily partition out of the cuticle, whereas the acid and two salts move into the symplast for subsequent translocation. When the results of the three environmental regimes were compared, the absorption of the monoethanolamine and potas sium salts were greatly reduced under low humi dity or water stress, whereas the acid and esters

Summary:The herbicide mefenacet has recently been developed for pre–emergence control of graminaceous and some dicotyledonous weeds in rice. Whereas mefenacet is known to inhibit root growth, its effect on the components of growth, cell division and cell enlargement, have not been determined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of mefenacet on growth, cell enlargement and cell division inChlamydomonas(a green alga) and oats. Cell division inChlamydomonaswas completely inhibited and cell enlargement was inhibited by an average of 18% during the first cell cycle period when cells were treated with 6–7 μM mefenacet. The rate of oat root growth in sand culture between 12 and 24 h after initiation of treatment was reduced 90% at 10 μM mefenacet. Cell enlargement of oat coleoptile sections in culture solution was inhibited 25% at 10 μM. Mefenacet inhibited mitotic entry rather than disrupted the mitotic sequence. Cell division in oat roots was inhibited 54% by 10 μM mefenacet. This shows cell division inhibition occurs in G1, S, or G2of the cell cycle. The action of mefenacet is most like that of the chloroacetamides among the herbicide classes known to inhibit

Résumé:De la poudre de cellulose ou des fragments de paille de blé sont mélangées á un substrat inerte (sable stérilisé). A l'issue de différents temps d'incubation (0 á 8 semaines) du substrat ainsi amendé des graines de sorgho sont semées et une extraction des exsudats racinaires et produits de décomposition des matiéres organiques est réali‐sée aprés deux semaines de culture. L'influence de ces extraits sur la germination de graines deStriga hermonthica(Del.) Benth. est la suivante: dans tous les cas, on assiste á une réduction importante du taux de germination au terme de 4 á 6 semaines d'incubation des produits organiques. Un effet stimulant de l'apport de paille est toutefois noté dans les premiéres semaines de sa dégradation. Une meilleure connaissance des mécanismes et processus de stimulation et d'inhibition liés aux apports de matiére organique devrait permettre une rationalisation des amendements en pay

Summary:Rooted cuttings ofPyrus melanocarpa(Michx.) Willd. had a 3.5‐fold greater tolerance to soil‐applied hexazinone than those ofRubus hispidusL. in a greenhouse trial.R. hispidusaccumulated four times more14C‐label in the foliage following root uptake of14C‐hexazinone thanP. melano‐carpa. Here, the greater uptake and susceptibility ofR. hispiduswas related to its greater root:fol‐iage (weight) ratio compared to the tolerantP. melanocarpa. However, in whole plant metabolism studies employing younger plants there were no differences in14C accumulation in the leaves. Here14Chexazinone was converted to a number of hydroxylated and/or demethylated triazinone metabolites in both species following vacuum infiltration into leaf disks and root sections, or following root uptake in whole plants. A major difference in metabolism between the two species was the greater formation of the mono demethylated metabolite, B, [3‐cyclohexyl‐6‐methylamino‐l‐methyl‐l,3,5‐triazine‐2,4‐dione] inP. melanocarpawhich may also contribute to its greater tolerance. Zusammenfassung:Die von 1975 bis 1979 durchgefuhrten Gefafiver‐suche zum Konkurrenzverhalten zwischen Avena fatua L. (Flug‐Hafer) und zwei Sommerweizen‐sorten ergaben folgende Wirkungen auf den Kornertrag: Im Wettbewerb um die Nahrstoffe nahm die Konkurrenz des FIug‐Hafers mil hoheren Dungungsgaben überproportional zu (Anstieg des Minderertrages von 13 auf 23%). Temporare Trockenheit steigerte die Konkur‐renzwirkung von Avena fatua. Die Besatzdichte von 4 Avena‐fatua‐ und 16 Weizenpflanzen/ Gefa'B bewirkte einen Ertragsrückgang bei Wei‐zen um 9% und 8 Avena‐fatua‐PRanzen/GefaB einen solchen von 14%. Der EiweiBgehalt im Weizenkorn wurde um durchschnittlich 5,5% gemindert. Lichtmessungen ergaben je nach Zeit‐raum eine Reduktion der fur den Weizen nutz‐baren Strahlung bei hoher Flug‐Hafer‐Dichte um 30 bis 35%. Der dadurch bedingte Ertragsverlust betrug im vierjahrigen Durchschnitt 19%. Sortenunterschiede traten nur bei Lichtkonkur‐renz auf. Die Wurzelkonkurrenz beeinfluBte vor‐rangig den Strohertrag, die Lichtkonkurrenz hingegen verstarkt den Kornertrag. Der Zeitfak‐tor wirkte sich vor allem bei hoher Düngung und bei hohem Besatz mil Avena fatua aus. Ein Entwicklungsvorsprung des Flug‐Hafers von 5 Wochen brachte einen Minderertrag des Weizens von 45% gegenüber gleichzeitiger Saat. Summary:Absorption and translocation of14C‐glyphosate was evaluated under controlled conditions in peas (Pisum sativumL.) and broad beans (Vicia fabaL.) parasitised or not by crenate broomrapeOrobanche crenataForsk.). Absorption increased with time up to 12 days after treatment, and reached about 50% of the14C‐glyphosate applied. Three days after treatment 70–85% of the total herbicide absorbed had been translocated out of the treated leaflet. There was no consistent differ ence in absorption and translocation between infected and non‐infected plants 12 days after treatment. The14C‐glyphosate concentration in the root system increased with time in broad beans. In peas it remained more or less constant from 3 days after treatment. Generally, pods were stronger sinks for glyphosate than other parts of the plant. Summary:A matrix model was constructed for the prediction of vertical seed movement within the soil. This was inserted into a model of the life‐cycle ofAlopecurus myosuroidesin order to predict seed population dynamics. Parameter values were obtained from published sources and from a single field cultivation experiment using coloured plastic beads. Résumé:Des expériences ont été conduites sur terrain infesté par la prèle de champs, à Saint‐Simon, dans la province de Québec au Canada, du printemps 1985 à l'automne 1987. Elles ont été réalisées pour mesurer d'une part l'effet répressif de diverses successions d'interventions herbicides effectuées dans l'orge et le maïs‐grain cultivés en rotation et d'autre part l'influence de ces deux cultures sur l'évolution de trois peuplements de la prèle des champs. L'orge s'est avérée plus compétitive que le maïs‐grain à l'égard de la mauvaise herbe. L'orge a empêché les peuplements de prêle d'augmenter au fil des années alors que dans les parcelles de maïs‐grain les densités de tiges ont connu annuellement une hausse. Le MCPA amine utilisé tôt en post‐levée des cultures ne réprime la plante que temporairement et n'exerce après quelques années aucun effet significatif sur les densités de tiges. Dans le maïs, les applications d'une association de bromoxynil et de MCPA effectuées tardivement entre les rangs ont entraîné après deux années d'utilisation sur trois, une diminution de 8% de la densité des tiges dans le peuplement. Dans les parcelles témoins le nombre de tiges a augmenté en trois ans de 60%. L'application d'amitrole après la récolte de l'orge, sur une repousse de la plante et sur ses parties aériennes épargnées par le passage de la moissonneuse‐batteuse, a permis une répression efficace de longue durée.
