Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungLight and nitrogen (N) interaction effects on rice (Oryza sativaL., cv. UPLRi‐7) were studied in the growth chamber, and effects on its competition withRottboellia cochinchinensis(Lour.) W.D. Clayton andEchinochloa colonum(L.) Link were studied in the field. In the field, N availability increased the canopy light absorption coefficient, and reduced the sunlit leaf area index of rice. In growth chambers, rice plants grown under conditions of low photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) had higher shoot N concentration than when grown at higher PAR. The photosynthetic rate was strongly correlated with leaf N content per unit leaf area. When no N was applied there was no difference in dry matter yield between plants grown at 150 and 400 μE m−2s−1. At various N levels, dry matter increased with increasing light intensity. A reduction in light intensity did not give a proportionate decrease in plant growth. The results suggest that an increase in shoot N concentration is an adaptive mechanism of shade plants. Bei der Anzucht in Pflanzenwuchs‐kammern hatten Reispflanzen bei niedriger Beleuchtungsstärke eine hohere N‐Konzentration als bei stärkerer Beleuchtung. Die Photosyntheserate war deutlich mit dem N‐Gehalt, bezogen auf die Blattfläche, korreliert. Ohne N‐Düngung traten bei 150 und 400 μE m−2s−1keine Trockenmassenunterschiede auf. Bei verscbiedenen N‐Düngungsstufen nahm die Bildung von Trockenmasse mit der Lichtintensität zu. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungThe nature and distribution of14C atrazine (2‐ chloro‐ 4 ‐ethylamino‐ 6 ‐isopropylamino‐s‐tria‐ zine) residues in resistant and susceptible canola (Brassica napusL.) varieties were studied. Radiolabelled atrazine was applied to the plants just before the flowering stage and continued for 10 days. The plants were harvested 3, 10 and 25 days after the end of the treatment. The roots, shoots and pods of each plant were exhaustively extracted with methanol. The14C distribution between the methanol extracts and the plant matrix fractions (bound residues) was similar for the two varieties. High‐pressure liquid Chromatographie analysis of the methanol extracts showed that they contained two unknown metabolites (possibly conjugates) in addition to atrazine. The bound14C residues were released by supercritical methanol extraction and analysed by thin‐layer chromato‐ graphy, gas chromatography and high‐pressure liquid chromatography. Several14C components in the released material were detected. Bound atrazine and its two dealkylated metabolites represented only a very small portion (10–18%) of the total bound14C residues in the plants.Résidus14C extractibles et liés chez des plantes de canola(Brassica napus)traitées avec de l'atrazine radioactivement marquéeLa nature et la distribution de résidus d'atrazine14C (2‐chloro 4‐ethylamino‐6‐isopropylamino‐s‐triazine) chez des variétés de canola résistantes et sensibles ont étéétudiés. Les racines, tiges et gousses de chaque plante ont été complètement extractées avec du methanol. La distribution du14C entre les extraits méthanol et les fractions de plantes matricielles (liées) a été similaire pour les 2 variétés. Des analyses HPLC des extraits méthanol ont montré qu'ils contenaient deux metabolites inconnus (probablement combinés) en plus de l'atrazine. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungTriazine‐resistant (R) biotypes ofAmaranthus albusL. (tumble pigweed),A. blitoidesS. Wats. (prostrate pigweed),A. hybridusL. (smooth pigweed),A. retroflexus(redroot pigweed), andSolanum nigrumL. (black nightshade) were found in Spain. The former two R biotypes were found in simazine‐treated, non‐tilled olive orchards, whereas the latter three came from atrazine‐treated maize (Zea maysL.) crops. All R biotypes survived at rates up to 5.0 kg ha−1of soil‐incorporated atrazine or simazine, whereas their susceptible (S) or ‘wild type’ counterparts were completely controlled at levels of 0.25 kg ha−1atrazine, in the case ofA. hybridus, A. retroflexusandS. nigrum, and 2.5 kg ha−1in the case ofA. albusandA. blitoides. The higher tolerance to triazines of these latter S biotypes appears to be attributable to herbicide detoxification. Photosynthetic electron transport in R biotypes was little affected by atrazine and simazine, but was inhibited by diuron, as shown by fluorescence induction measurements in whole leaves. In Hill reaction assays, the R biotypes showed a high level of resistance to atrazine and simazine (resistance factors in the range 350–900), and very slight resistance to diuron (resistance factors in the range 1.1–1.6). It is concluded that all R biotypes have evolved a chloroplastic mode of resistance similar to that previously described for other triazine‐resistant weed biotypes.Résistances aux triazines des biotypes deSolanum nigrumet 4 espèces d'Amaranthus trousiées en EspagneDes biotypes résistant aux triazines (R) d'Amaranthus albusL., d'A. blitoïdesS. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungThe possibility of increasing the activity of glyphosate, imazapyr, sulfonylurea herbicides and triclopyr againstRhododendron ponticumL. was investigated using container‐grown plants. Glyphosate, imazapyr and triclopyr alone and metsulfuron‐methyl with added surfactant were all phytotoxic, imazapyr and triclopyr being the most effective at the doses used. Thifensulfuron‐methyl and tribenuron‐methyl with ‘Mixture B’ were ineffective. The surfactants ‘Mixture B’ and ‘Silwet L77’ consistently increased the activity of imazapyr and metsulfuron‐methyl. Mixtures of the herbicides did not lead to synergistic activity, and mixing imazapyr and triclopyr depressed the activity of each component. There was some enhancement of activity onR. ponticumwhen imazapyr and metsulfuron‐methyl were applied sequentially, 48 h apart.Effets de mélanges d'herbicides et d'adjuvants auRhododendron ponticumLa possibilité d'accroître l'activité du glyphosate, de l'imazapyr, des sulfonylurées et du triclopyr contreRhododendron ponticuma étéétudiée en utilisant des plantes cultivées en containers. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungGrowth, development and nutrient uptake of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumMill) and fathen (Chenopodium albumL.) roots were investigated under glasshouse and natural conditions. There were no significant differences between the two species in total root dry weight up to 3 weeks after emergence, althoughC. albumhad a lower proportion of root dry weight in the top soil layers (0–10, 10–20 cm) and higher proportions at greater depths (20–30, 30–40 cm) for the first 2 weeks. Under natural conditions,C. albumhad a greater root dry weight than tomato in the top soil layer (0–10 cm) and at depths between 40 and 70 cm. Root dry weight ofC. albumwas not greatly changed but that of tomato decreased with depth in soil layers between 10 and 60 cm.C. albumhad lower concentrations of N and Ca in the roots than tomato at all growth stages, but higher concentrations of P, K and Mg in the shoots. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungGlyphosate was applied to panicles of wild oats (Avena fatuaL.) before, at and after anthesis. The florets in spikelets exposed to the herbicide before, at and immediately after anthesis produced seeds with abnormal embryos and endosperm. Histological and embryological studies showed that in all cases the chemical did not stop the normal process of double fertilization in the florets. The zygote divided, but did not proceed beyond the proembryo stage. The development of both the proembryo and the endosperm was abnormal. The proembryos and the early stages of embryos showed no normal provascular or vascular tissue differentiation. Externally also there was no proper development of embryo parts, such as the scutellum, epiblast, shoot and root apices. The embryonic tissues showed considerable obliteration and shrinkage and the nuclei in cells appeared small and shrunken. The cells, especially in the meristem regions, appeared lacunose. The embryo and the endosperm in the caryopses treated with glyphosate 9 days after anthesis or later, were morphologically and structurally very similar to those of the controls of comparable age. It was concluded that the greater the delay of glyphosate application after anthesis, the less was the effect on seed development.Une étude histologique de l'effet du glyphosate sur le developpement des graines de folle avoine(Avena fatuaL.)Du glyphosate a été appliquéà des panicules de folle avoine (Avena fatuaL.), avant, pendant et après l'anthèse. L'embryon et l'endosperme chez les caryopses traités au glyphosate 9 jours après l'anthèse ou plus tard, étaient structurellement et morphologiquement très voisins de ceux des témoins à un âge comparable. Die Zygote teilte sich, doch kam sie nicht über das Proembryo‐Stadium hinaus. Die Entwicklung sowohl des Proembryos als auch des Endosperms war anormal. Die Proembryonen und ersten Embryo‐Stadien zeigten keine normale Entwicklung des Provascular‐bzw. Leitungsgewebes. Auch äußerlich waren die Embryonen nicht ordentlich entwickelt, was sich am Scutellum sowie Epiblast und an den Sproß‐und Wurzelspitzen zeigte. Die Embryo‐Gewebe hatten beträchtliche Lücken und Schrump‐fungen, und die Nuclei waren klein und geschrumpft. Die Zellen, besonders in den Meristemen, erschienen lückig. Nach Glyphosat‐Behandlungen 9 Tage oder später nach der Blüte entwickelten sich Embryo und Endosperm sowohl morphologisch als auch struk‐turell sehr ähnlich wie in Kontrollpflanzen gleichen Alters. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungRhizome segments fromAlternanthera philoxeroideswere shaken in solutions of14C‐glyphosate for 24 h to establish a range of internal tissue concentrations. Rhizomes were killed at concentrations of 16 μg g−1dry weight and above and survived at concentrations of 8 μg g−1dry weight and below. Plants grown in the field for 10 weeks in declining photoperiod were used to investigate the uptake and translocation of14C‐glyphosate after application of a constant dosage in either 1.0‐or 0.2‐μl droplets corresponding to concentrations of 1.06 and 5.3 g 1−1, of glyphosate acid, respectively. Use of smaller droplets of higher concentration increased absorption of14C, but did not improve translocation. Uptake by treated leaves was 25 and 41% of the applied glyphosate for the large and small droplets respectively, but translocation to underground parts of the plant was about 7% of applied14C‐activity. Radiolabel accumulated in new rhizomes was equivalent to about 0.5 μg g−1dry weight of glyphosate, at least 30 times below the concentration required for tissue death.Absorption et transport de glyphosate C14 chezAlternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.)Griseb. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungAlternanthera philoxeroides, grown under 10 h short‐day (SD) or 16 h long‐day (LD) photo‐periods, was administered foliar application of14C‐glyphosate equivalent to 27.4 μg per plant applied in 26 × 1‐μl droplets. Plants were also transposed from SD to LD photoperiod andvice versaone week before treatment. The data were compared with those obtained for field‐grown plants where the photoperiod gradually declined from 14.2 to 12.0 h over 10 weeks. Auto‐radiography showed transport of radiolabel to below‐ground parts within 3 days of treatment. Quantitative measurements of radiolabel by combustion and scintillation counting in plants harvested 3, 7 and 14 days after treatment confirmed uptake and translocation after 3 days which then remained constant. Recovery of label was incomplete, particularly in SD plants, where there was evidence of increasing leakage of radiolabel from the root system with time. Transposition of photoperiods had no effect on uptake or translocation suggesting that differences in plant size and phenology rather than photoperiod controlled behaviour. The proportion of applied radiolabel translocated from the treated leaf and retained in the plant (i.e. not exuded from the roots) was significantly lower in SD plants than LD plants with field grown plants showing highest translocation and retention in the rhizomes. However, only in SD plants (where translocation was least but plants were small) did glyphosate concentrations reach critical levels for inhibition.Absorption et transport de glyphosate C14 chezAlternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.)Griseb. L'autoradiographie a montré le transport du marqueur vers les parties souterraines dans les 3 jour après le traitement. Les mesures quantitatives du marqueur par combustion et scintillation, faites dans des plantes ramassées 3, 7 et 14 jours après le traitement ont confirmé l'absorption et le transport après trois jours qui demeurait ensuite constant. La récupération du marqueur était incomplète surtout chez les plantes JC, où il est apparu une augmentation de la perte du marqueur à partir du système racinaire avec le temps. Die Verlagerung radioaktiv markierter Substanz in unterirdische Pflanzenteile innerhalb 3 Tagen nach der Behandlung wurde autoradiographisch nachgewiesen. Die quantitative Messung der Radioaktivität durch Szintillations‐Zählung nach Veraschung von Pflanzen 3, 7 und 14 Tage nach der Behandlung bestätigte Aufnahme und Translokation nach 3 Tagen, danach konstante Werte. Die Wiederfindung der Radioaktivität war unvollständig, besonders bei Kurztag‐Pflanzen, bei denen nachweislich Radioaktivität über das Wurzelsystem verlorenging. Die Änderung der Photoperiode beeinflußte Aufnahme und Translokation nicht; das Verhalten wird wohl durch die Pflanzengröße und Phänologie mehr als von der Photoperiode bestimmt. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungThe allelopathic influence of four developmental stages of nodding thistle (small rosette, large rosette, bolting and dead plants) on eleven test species (six grasses, four legumes and itself) was investigated using aqueous extract bioassays, aqueous leachate bioassays, and bioassays based on addition of ground material to soil. The aqueous extract and leachate bioassays indicated that nodding thistle was most allelopathic at the rosette stages, while the bioassays involving amendment of soil with thistle tissue showed bolting live and dead plants to be the most allelopathic. It is proposed that nodding thistle is allelopathic at two phases of its development, i.e. at the early bolting stage when the larger rosette leaves are decomposing and releasing soluble inhibitors, and at the stage when bolting plants are dying and releasing insoluble inhibitors. Nodding thistle seedlings appear to be stimulated by addition of thistle tissues to soil, indicating that thistle plants may weaken pasture and simultaneously encourage recruitment of its own species. This is consistent with previous studies detecting high densities of thistle seedlings in the vicinity of deceased parent plants. The six grass species were generally more tolerant to thistle allelopathic effects than were the four legume species, but no consistent differences emerged between different grass or legume species.Influence de l'age de la plante sur le potentiel allélopathique du chardon penche(Carduus nutansL.)vis a vis des prairies de graminées et de légumineusesL'influence allélopathique de 4 stades de développement du chardon penché (petite rosette, grande rosette, montaison, plantes mortes) sur 11 espèces tests (6 graminées, 4 légumineuses et lui‐même) a étéétudiée en utilisant des bioessais d'extraction acqueuse, des bioessais de lessivage acqueux et des bioessais fondés sur l'addition au sol d'amendement. Les bioessais d'extraction acqueuse et de lessivage ont montré que le chardon penchéétait plus allélopathique au stade rosette tandis que les bioessais impliquant l'amendement de sol avec des tissues de chardon ont montré que la montaison et les plantes mortes étaient les plus allélopathiques. Il est proposé que le chardon penché est allélopathique à 2 phases de son développement, par exemple au stade montaison précoce quand les plus grandes feuilles de la rosette se décomposent et relachent les inhibiteurs solubles, et au stade où les plantes montées meurent et relächent les inhibiteurs insolubles. Les plantules de chardon penché apparaissent être stimulées par l'addition de tissus de chardon au sol, montrant que les plantes de chardon peuvent affaiblir une prairie et simultanément favoriser sa propre réimplantation. Ceci est conforme avec des études précédentes montrant des fortes densités de plantules de chardon au voisinage de plantes parentes mortes. Les 6 espèces de graminées ont été de façon générale plus tolérantes aux effets allélopathiques que les 4 espèces de légumineuses, mais aucune différence importante ne s'est exprimée entre les différentes espèces de graminées ou de légumineuses.Einfluβ des Pflanzenalters der Nickenden Distel(Carduus nutans L.)auf die allelopathische Wirkung gegen Weidegräser und LeguminosenDie allelopathische Wirkung der Nickenden Distel wurde in 4 Entwicklungsstadien (in kleiner und in voller Rosette, blütentreibend und abgestorben) gegen 11 Pflanzenarten (6 Gräser, 5 Leguminosen und sich selbst) mit wäßrigen Auszügen, Perkolationswasser und Bodenmaterial zum Substrat geprüft. Mit den wäßrigen Auszügen und dem Perkolationswasser zeigte sich die Nickende Distel im Rosetten‐Stadium am meisten allelopathisch, während Bodenmaterial mit Resten blütentreibender und abgestorbener Pflanzen wirksamer war. Es kann angenommen werden, daß die Nickende Distel in 2 Entwicklung sphasen allelopathisch wirkt, nämlich wenn die größeren Rosettenblätter oder wenn die blütentreibenden Pflanzen vergeben und 1ösliche Hemmstoffe entlassen. Keimpflanzen der Nickenden Distel werden offensichtlich durch Pflanzenmaterial der Distel im Wachstum angeregt; die Distel schwächt also Weide‐Pflanzenarten und fördert zugleich ihre eigene Entwicklung. Dieser Befund deckt sich mit der Beobachtung hoher Keimpflanzen‐Dichten um abgestorbenen Mutterpflanzen. Die 6 Gräser waren durchweg gegenüber der allelopathischen Wirkung der Distel unempfindlicher

Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungPatteras of seed dispersal and seedling recruit ment ofSorghum halepense(L.) Pers. were compared in abandoned and cultivated fields in Argentina. In both the abandoned and cultivated plots, the greatest concentration of seed fell below, or only a short distance, from the parent plants. A maize combine harvester greatly increased the distance of dispersal of a small part of the seed population. The availability of seed for dispersal, the direction and velocity of wind and the combine harvester were important factors determining the temporal and spatial patterns of seed distribution. The ratio of recruited seedlings to seeds shed was only 1% under the parent plant, but increased to about 100% at a distance of 1.25 m. Soil tilling, which is required for seedling recruitment, and seed density were important factors in determining seedling density as the distance from the parent plants increased. The rate of seedling recruitment was higher in areas where most of the seeds were dispersed late in the season than in those where dispersal occurred early.Dispersion des graines, distribution et reprise des plantules deSorghum halepense (L.)Pers.Les schémas de dispersion des graines et de reprise des plantules deSorghum halepense(L.) Une moisonneuse à maïí a grandement augmenté la distance de dispersion d'une petite partie de la population grainière. La disponibilité des graines pour la dispersion, la direction et la vitesse du vent, et la moissonneuse ont été d'importants facteurs de détermination pour les schémas de distribution spatiale et temporaire. Le ratio de reprise de plantule était seulement de 1% sous les plantes parentes mais augmentait jusqu'à près de 100%à une distance de 1, 25 m. Le travail du sol, qui est nécessaire pour la reprise des plantules, et la densité grainière étaient d'importants facteurs dans la détermination de la densité des plantules quand la distance des plantes parentes augmente.
