A highly significant correlation was calculated between French wine harvest dates and central England summer temperature from 1659 to 1879 which harvest dates might be used to approximate western European summer temperatures for the pre‐instrumental period. A proxy summer temperature index was thereby constructed which combined French and German wine harvest and central England temperature data. This index was significantly correlated with a tree‐ring density prealpine Swiss summer temperature index from 1484 to 1973 and also with Northern Hemisphere annual temperatures from 1579 to 1973. Comparison of the proxy index with Alpine glaciation summaries showed highly significant relationships between glacial advance and intervals of below‐ median proxy temperature for all glacial studies combined and for the two most complete individual studies allowing a, even‐year lag between temperature decline and glacial advance. The initial Little Ice Age glacial expansion around A.D. 1600 occurred towards the close of the longest below‐median proxy temperature sequence which lasted from A.D. 1569 to 1604. A variety of deformation structures in sandy sediments are described, the origin of which may be ascribed to the escape of excess pore‐water from liquefied and fluidized sediments in response to density instabilities created by external and/or internal loading. A number of deformations found in exposed nearshore sediments of an artificially drained lake provide an explanatory model according to which rapid drops in water level during the development of waterway systems in connection with post‐glacial land uplift are suggested in many cases to have served as creational environments for soft sediment deformation. Faunal, floral and sedimentological properties of Norwegian Sea core V27‐86 were examined in order to reconstruct the paleo‐oceanographic history of this region. Downcore variations in the relative abundance of three microfossil groups and several sediment properties exhibit three different climate response patterns (CRP). Each pattern is judged to represent the response of a different part of the climate system. The covariance patterns among coccoliths, henthic foraminifera, and other properties suggest that the Norwegian Sea has been ice‐free and productive during the present interhlacial. the penultimate interglacial (isotopic‐stage se) and at least partially ice‐free during an intermediate climatic regime (stages sa‐d). A maximum change in these measures occurs at the boundary between isotopic stage 5a (an intermediate climatic regime)and isotopic stage 4 (a glacial climatic regime). In contrast, planktic foraminiferal assemblages and oxygen isotope measurements on planktic foraminifera show a major change at the end of stage 5e (the penultimate interglacial). The contrasting behavior of these two sets of observations is explained by a model which postulates a low‐salinity surface layer 115,000 to 75,000 years ago

The mode and nature of ice‐flow mechanism leading to ice‐lobe formation during deglaciation is described. These mechanisms are deduced primarily from their geomorphological and stratigraphical effects: the arc‐like formations fringing the ice lobes, certain patterns of landform elements, and in some cases the stratigraphical signs indicating ice‐marginal readvance or lack of it. Several ice‐lobe creation mechanisms are presented along with the associated landform patterns they produce. The theory encompassing the fan‐like ice flows, the ice‐lobe formation, and the arc formations fringing them is applied to the deglaciation in Soviet Karelia and adjacent Finland. Deglaciation proceeded here from the southeast to the northwest, and complex arc formations derived from the major ice lobes.
