Collagen and noncollagen protein synthesis in skin of rats that were wounded (4-mm trephine punch full-thickness wound) or burned (20% of body surface, full-thickness burn) and wounded was quantitated over 2 weeks post-burn. Granulation tissue from animals that were wounded had a peak of collagen and noncollagen protein synthesis on day 4 post-trauma, whereas in animals that were burned and wounded, granulation tissue surrounded by eschar had greatly reduced protein synthesis on day 4, but displayed a late peak of synthesis on day 10. Protein synthesis at a site 2 cm distant from the nearest margin of the eschar was normal. The latter information indicates that a full-thickness burn decreases protein synthesis in granulation tissue generated beneath eschar, but that wound healing is normal at a site distant from the burn.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop an objective and quantitative scale to measure the severity of burn injury. The scale which best describes the estimation sample consists of seven variables: sex, age, percentage body surface burned, percentage second-degree burn, percentage third-degree burn, number of critical sites burned, and the presence of inhalation injury. These variables were the “best ”predictive subset of the larger group of 40 variables, for the estimation sample utilized in the study. The scale was assessed for predictive validity to outcome mortality and successfully cross-validated to a different set of patients from burn centers and a sample of patients from community hospitals.

This report deals with an innovation in the total care of the severely burned child, utilizing Art and Play Therapy as a projective technique, a diagnostic tool, and a treatment modality. Developmental, physical, and emotional issues were considered in the design of this project. All patients responded positively, demonstrating reduced anxiety, mood elevation, and cooperation with unit staff. Therapist noted child-abuse cases and acted accordingly. Every precaution was taken to minimize the risk of contamination and cross contamination of art and play materials. This was a team effort including all concerned with the welfare of the child.

摘要:

A number of burns in firefighters were treated using standard methods of burn wound care. A pattern of injury was noted. Evaluation of the anatomical distribution of the injuries led to recognition of defects in uniform design, particularly the boot. Suggestions are presented for redesign or improvement of protective clothing.
