Mesh grafting is the most commonly emplyed technique to obtain maximal use of autogenous skin. This report reviews many technical considerations involved in mesh grafting to include the preoperative preparation of the donor site, skin grafting, meshing the graft, and application and postoperative care of the graft. The techniques described are being used in the University of Virginia burn center and are susceptible to reproduction in other burn treatment facilities.

A simple and logical technique to treat interdigital burn scar contractures uses double interdigitating flaps (not rotated) at the apex of the reconstructed web spaces and split-thickness skin grafts to close the triangular defects. Long-term results in six patients have been gratifying functionally and cosmetically, and none of the webs have re-formed.

A fire causing 25 or more deaths is termed a fire catastrophe. There have been 52 such fire disasters in the United States thus far in the 20th century. A review of these catastrophes demonstrates that they have caused tremendous destruction of life and property, but they also have led to changes in public opinion and to important advances in fire prevention. Although the frequency of such fire disasters has declined, the potential for modern-day fire catastrophes involving high-rise buildings, worldwide terrorism, and large crowds collected at various social events and community institutions poses serious challenges to fire protection technology and to society.
