摘要:
ABSTRACTCurrent water quality laws are insufficient to protect environmentally dependent maricultural activities. Dynamic water quality laws are needed which would define some of the natural functions of water movement over the earth's surface and it's value in sustaining living resource production.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Refuse Act Permit Program was created by Executive Order No. 11374 to broaden the Federal Government's role in abating pollution from industry and business. Applying the provisions of the 1899 River and Harbor Act, the program was created following court decisions whereby the Act was interpreted to require a permit for all waste discharges except municipal sewage and discharges from ships and other watercraft. All other dischargers including fish cultural operations fall under the broad purview of the Refuse Act.Upon receipt of a technically complete application, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State Water Pollution Control Agency evaluate the impact of the discharge on water quality, determine waste treatment needs, and develop conditions for inclusion in the Refuse Act Permit. In the Southeast Region of EPA, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fishery Service provide technical support to this effort to insure maximum protection of fish and wildlife resources.Fish cultural operations have been classified as a critical industry based on studies conducted by EPA policies. Procedures for processing applications in this category are currently being developed and should be finalized in the very near future.

摘要:
ABSTRACTPompano (Trachinotus carolinus), conditioned by temperature and light and stimulated by hormone injections, were forced to spawn during the non‐breeding season. Three consecutive regimes of temperature and light were used: 1) 26 days at 18 C and 10 hours light; 2) 21 days at 23 C and 13 hours light; and 3) 25 to 33 days at 28 C and 15 hours light. Conditioned fish were then periodically injected with varying dosages of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) and pregnant mare serum (PMS). Spawning was obtained only from HCG injected fish. Ripe eggs were expressed 80 hours after the initial injection. Fertilized eggs hatched after 24 to 26 hours at 28

摘要:
ABSTRACTHigh costs of commercially produced feeds coupled with high conversions of feed to fish flesh inflates the production cost of marine fish and shellfish and subsequently reduces the opportunity for profit to the potential mariculturist. This paper summarizes the results of tests conducted utilizing a diet of inexpensive ground industrial fish mixed with soybean meal and compares the growth, mortality and efficiency of fish receiving this diet to those receiving a diet of commercially produced trout chow. Discussed also are techniques used in capturing and rearing young pompano for the tests as well as actual cultural techniques.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources began studies on the cage culture of marine species in 1969. Major emphasis has been placed on the culture of pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) because of its high value. Pompano were cultured to a maximum of 284 g average weight in one season. Pompano will have to be overwintered in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Pompano were acclimated to 0.2 ppt salinity. Mullet (Mugil cephalus) stocked with pompano controlled fouling of cages. Facilities for culturing the fish are discussed. Other species successfuly cultured in cages in the marine habitat include striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri).

摘要:
ABSTRACTSuccessful rearing of marine fish larvae depends on numerous factors, but a suitable food supply in conjunction with reasonably good water quality are the two factors that are of greatest importance. Most newly hatched marine fishes have mouths that are too small to begin feeding on Artemia sp. nauplii, but some copepod nauplii, rotifers, mollusk larvae, and dinoflagellates provide suitable food. Size of food organisms and the food level maintained in rearing tanks are important for initiation of feeding and for subsequent growth and survival. Optimum rearing temperatures need to be determined for each species to assure that growth is rapid during the larval stage. Both growth and survival of fish larvae are enhanced when a phytoplankton bloom is maintained in the rearing system. Larvae grow and survive better in large culture tanks than in smaller ones.Little is known about optimum stocking densities of eggs and larvae in rearing systems. Abnormal development of larvae is a common occurrence and can be attributed to stresses of the rearing tank environment. Diseases and parasites may affect survival of eggs and larvae. Energy relations have been determined for egg and yolk sac larvae but similar research is required on advanced larval stages. The variability in egg quality that will result from artificial spawning procedures will also be a factor affecting subsequent rearing attempts.
