AbstractThis article appears in ‘The National Research Council in 1976: Current Issues and Studies,’ National Academy of Sciences, Washington DC.The Preface reads: ‘The National Research Council is, by any standard, a sizeable enterprise, with some 7 400 men and women serving on some 940 committees and subcommittees, panels and subpanels, boards and ad hoc study groups. Given that breadth, this initial effort to open a window into the operating Research Council must necessarily provide only a narrow view.Nevertheless, the hope is that this report — and those to follow each year — will be truly revealing of the nature of the institution, the issues that concern and often trouble its officers, and the ultimate goals of its several parts. The documents that constitute this report include essays by those who direct the National Research Council, its units, and its parent institutions, as well as descriptions of a few of the study projects under way in 1976’.

AbstractThe eighth annual report of the National Science Board (NSB),Science at the Bicentennial - A Report from the Research Community, prepared by the NSB, policy-making body of the National Science Foundation, is made up from comments by several hundred representatives of the research community in the United States (the universities, industry, government, and independent research institutes) on existing and prospective problems in research operations.Their comments, made in response to letters of inquiry from NSB, showed the greatest concerns to be in these areas:Dependability in funding for research.Vitality of the research system.Freedom in the research system.Confidence in science and technology.Also included in the report are a chapter providing some historical perspective on research in the United States, and a study of available surveys on public attitudes toward science and technology, which we print below.

AbstractThe Medical Research Council in the UK submitted the report (HMSO £2.75, ISBN 10 256776 X) of its activities, from 1 April 1975 to 31 March 1976, divided into seven chapters. The first, which we reprint below, covers general policy. The next five cover the activities of the four research boards and the Environmental Medicine Research Policy Committee; these chapters contain both accounts of scientific policy and new developments, and selected reports and reviews of research work. A chapter on administrative information completes the report.
