Nursing care of the patient undergoing an amputation demands an awareness of the psychological and emotional upheaval that the patient will experience as he strives to accept his loss. Nurses who are informed and Knowledgeable regarding types and levels of amputation, appropriate exercises, and general pre- and postoperative care of the amputee can help decrease patient anxiety and promote smooth hospitalization and transitional retun to daily living. The nurse's ability to implement the nursing process and thereby formulate a compreaensive and individualized care plan will benefit all patients, promoting wellness and improving the quatity of nursing care.

Nurses and physical therapists play important roles In the immediate postoperative care of the amputee. This article will acquaint the nurse with the components of a physical therapy plan for the amputee in order for the nurse to reinforce this plan. The author describes the general physical therapy program required to enable an amputee to become a successful prosthesis wearer. Information includes the things to be avoided as well as goals to be accomplished.

Involving the prosthetist early in the patient's recovery, giving appropriate stump care, educating patient and family for follow-up care, and implementing an endurance-building exercise program are major components of this preparation.

More than 20,000,000 Americans suffer with some form of rheumatoid arthritis. Nursing management includes both physical and emotional care. The theory of coping mechanisms for patients with chronic disease as identified by Z.J. Lipowski is presented, supported by case presentations. The complex pattern of movements typical of normal gait are usually taken for granted until we experience problems with ambulatton. Gait assessment is an integral part of any physical examination and can be used as a screening technique to determine the integrity of the musculoskeletal system. This article reviews terminology associated with gait, developmental aspects of gait, special considerations of gait observation, normal and abnormal gait patterns. The information provided can be useful for daily nursing observations, as well as structured physical and nursing assessments.

Sheletal muscle atrophy may be considered as changes in size, strength, appearance, and function of muscle. Atrophy may occur due to deficient blood supply, changes related to the aging process, and/or disuse. This article provides a review of the types and causes of muscular atrophy, and briefly suggests recommendations for nursing care which will assist in minimizing the effects of immobilization as evidenced by muscle atrophy.
