摘要:
Teaching student nurses to handle orthopaedic equipment has been difficult because of a lack of equipment in the college laboratory and the limited number of placements available for students to practice in an orthopaedic setting. Through the combined efforts of School of Nursing faculty and nursing staff in a rehabilitation center, an orthopaedic Workshop was planned and conducted to provide learning experiences with traction therapy, special beds and frames, ambulatory aides, cast therapy, and orthoses (braces). The outcome of combining the expertise of both nursing staff and faculty, as well as providing practice sessions for manipulating equipment was perceived as successful by both students and workshop facilitators.

摘要:
Nursing orientees come to a new position with various backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge of orthopaedics. This article describes one solution to the problem of designing an orientation learning program. Orthopaedic Resource Day includes assessment of learners' needs, recommendations of independent study to meet the needs, and self-directed study with independent use of resources. Once the program is developed, the instructor is not committed to teach an entire day of class, but serves as resource person. The orientees, in turn, do not waste time attending lectures on familiar material, but instead pursue learning activities to strengthen identified weak areas. Orthopaedic Resource Day is congruent with present day concerns of cost and time effectiveness.

摘要:
This article will help other orthopaedic nurses design a teaching program for their total hip patients. The article discusses the development of an audiovisual presentation for the preoperative total hip patient. The program was designed to prevent the delivery of inconsistent, time consuming and, often nonexistent, preoperative teaching. A prepared audiovisual presentation is favored over a verbal presentation because (1) the nurse spends less time, (2) information is consistent with each presentation, and (3) the sense of sight is reached as well as the sense of hearing. Teaching can be done at the patient's convenience, which gains the support of the patients, their families, and the nursing staff.
