摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents a broadly based conceptualized model of nursing practice. Nursing is defined as the therapeutic use of self for the benefit of others after first having acquired the knowledge and skill necessary to identify need. Essential to nursing is the interaction of nurse with client(s). Interactions can be diagnostic, therapeutic, educative, or supportive, and can address four categories of client needs: health, developmental, emotional, and interpersonal.

摘要:
AbstractTwentieth century Americans are ill‐prepared for death, either their own or that of another. Death has become a less visible part of daily life. Health professionals in general and nurses in particular often deny their legitimate role in relation to the dying patient, and instead regard death as a treatment failure. This paper contrasts the dying role and the sick role of the patient, and the therapeutic role and the supportive role of the nurse. It applies the concepts of role insufficiency and role supplementation to the care of the dying and suggests implications for researc

摘要:
AbstractThis article explores the subject of unique knowledge in nursing by attempting to answer three questions: 1) what is unique knowledge, 2) does nursing have a unique knowledge base, and 3) is a unique knowledge base essential to nursing? It argues that knowledge becomes unique because of the unique perspective of the discipline in which that knowledge is incorporated. A survey of various attempts to define the unique focus of nursing is followed by a discussion of the importance of such a definition if nursing is to establish itself as a professional discipline.

摘要:
AbstractFor the hospitalized individual, personal space can be the only remaining evidence of identity and integrity. This article reviews the concept of boundaries and some research on proxemics, and suggests the importance of these findings in nursing practice.

摘要:
AbstractA sample of 138 preoperative, adult patients were randomly assigned choice and no choice conditions. The in the choice condition were asked decide in which of two locations t preferred to receive their preoperative injections. Pain of injection was sessed using the Pilowsky and Kaufman visual analog scale and a verbal and numerical descriptive scale. Locus control was measured by Rotter's Scale on the night before surgery.Analysis of the data showed a lack support for hypotheses predicting a difference in pain perception on the basis of decision‐making and locus of control. However, when preoperative injection ratings were compared with past ratings of intramuscular injections, those patients in the no choice condition perceived significantly less pain from the former, Additional analyses revealed that age, sex, and nurse variation had significant effects on the perception of pai
