A longitudinal study of the effects of business school training on the motivation to manage of Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students was conducted using the forced‐choice version of the Miner Sentence Completion Scale (MSCS). Male MBA students had significantly higher levels of motivation to manage than female MBA students, with part‐time females registering the lowest managerial motivation levels among the MBA students. Managerial motivation scores were significant predictors of salary after graduation, but failed to predict programme completion and MBA grade point averages. Based on measurements taken at the beginning of the degree programme and after graduation, results indicated no significant difference in managerial motivation levels associated with business school MBA training. In spite of the increased interest in the role of situational factors as moderators of leader orientation‐performance relationships, the possible role of organizational transience as a mediating variable has been ignored. The authors used Fiedler's Least Preferred Co‐worker (LPC) Scale in a study of 39 construction site managers. It was found that these managers have a stronger task orientation than other occupational groups who are typically located in relatively permanent organizations. Internal‐external locus of control is an individual difference characteristic which, it has been proposed, affects the turnover process. Using a sample of 119 nurses, this longitudinal study found that locus of control moderated the relationships between two facets of satisfaction, promotion and pay, both to withdrawal cognitions and turnover. In addition, locus of control moderated the relationship between withdrawal cognitions and turnover. Internals showed significantly stronger negative relationships than externals between these satisfaction facets and withdrawal cognitions and turnover. Internals also showed a stronger positive relationship than externals between withdrawal cognitions and turnover. This paper uses a model drawn from the occupational stress literature to predict variations in the psychological experience of long‐term unemployed men. The model proposes that variations are mainly due to the stressfulness of the environment which is defined by the balance of problems, supports and opportunities existing in it. The model assumes, however, that the impact of the environment is modified by certain other variables such as social class and financial circumstances, and personal attributes such as coping tactics. The model is tested on a sample of 399 men who had been unemployed for between 6 and 12 months. Stepwise multiple regression is used to test the model, and it is shown that the severity of problems does predict level of psychological symptoms even when the conditioning variables and the personal attribute variables have been controlled. This study examined the utility of self‐rating compared to supervisory and management ratings of training needs. Both self‐ and supervisory assessment of training needs were collected from 200 managers and professionals using a discrepancy model of needs assessment. Self‐ratings tended to be more lenient and evidenced less halo than supervisor ratings of subordinates. Self‐ and supervisory needs assessment of the subordinate were not significantly related. Self‐ratings of needs assessment resulted in three independent factors while supervisory needs assessment of subordinates resulted in only one general factor. These findings, coupled with evidence that supervisors projected their own needs when identifying subordinates' needs, suggested that self‐ratings of needs assessment may be an important component of a valid needs assessm

Nine hundred and ninety‐one newly blinded and visually handicapped adults were tested with the Purdue Pegboard test of manual dexterity while they were undergoing vocational rehabilitation. Normative data were derived to enable comparisons to be made among various subgroups of the population on the basis of degree of residual vision, which together with the gender of the subjects is shown to be a significant determining variable.
