This study sought to determine women's knowledge concerning the menopause and to investigate the relationship between a woman's level of knowledge and her background characteristics. Data were collected from 167 forty- to 60-year-old women from a general urban population by means of a mailed questionnaire. On the average, the women responded correctly to 59 percent of the questions. Younger women, those who were employed, and women with higher levels of education performed better than older, unemployed, and less well-educated women. Questions on which the women showed the weakest knowledge suggest that old wives' tales concerning the menopause have not totally disappeared.

摘要:
The nursing profession has begun to address the issue of sexual health counseling by nurses, thus moving toward the goal of providing holistic patient care. Since the professional preparation of the nurse as a sexual health teacher and counselor requires substantive changes in existing nursing curricula, some nursing educators and practitioners have initiated efforts to determine appropriate educational experiences for nurses. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a self-instructional module developed by the investigator to prepare nursing students for dealing with the sexuality concerns of male myocardial infarction patients. Using a pre-test-posttest control group design, the evaluation was carried out through field testing of the module on a convenience sample of 161 nursing students in four baccalaureate programs in the United States. Field testing consisted of administration of the module, together with pre-posttesting of subjects on a knowledge inventory and a behavioral intentions/comfort inventory. Following administration of the module, experimental subjects' scores indicated significant increases in knowledge of sexuality counseling of MI patients (p<.001) and comfort in dealing with patients' sexuality concerns (p<.001).

This study investigated pre- and postpartum attitudes toward self, spouse, and the ideal of 47 primiparous couples who chose the psychoprophylactic (Lamaze) method of childbirth, 34 who were able to share the delivery as planned (Y/Y) and 13 who were blocked from doing so because of complications, necessitating cesarean section (Y/ N). Osgood Semantic Differential ratings revealed that both Y/N men and women perceived self- and various ideal concepts lower pre- and postnatally than did Y/Y subjects. Both groups of women showed statistically significant increases pre-post in activity for several concepts, and Y/N women also showed increases in potency for the ideal woman. Y/N husbands showed no statistically significant pre-post gains, while Y/Y husbands widened a statistically significant gain pre-post on the activity dimension for self. Implications for nursing practice and for further research are discussed.

This study compared the effect of teaching methods on patient anxiety after leaving the coronary care unit. Twenty myocardial infarction patients were studied; half received from the investigator structured pretransfer teaching designed to orient them to differences in the environment and care in the progressive unit. All subjects received unstructured pretransfer teaching by CCU nurses. Data were analyzed using a two-tailed t test for independent groups with a.05 alpha. As measured by a psychological questionnaire, no statistical differences were found in patient anxiety between groups at the time of transfer. However, the anxiety level of subjects who received structured pretransfer teaching was significantly lower than the anxiety level of control subjects on each of four physiological parameters measured: systolic blood pressure the day and time of transfer and heart rates the day and time of transfer. An indication exists, therefore, that a structured pretransfer teaching program is a more appropriate type of nursing intervention than an unstructured one.
