Summary and ConclusionsThis study investigated the teaching activities of the nursing practitioner in order to clarify her teaching role, to examine the scope of her teaching and to identify the basic nursing preparation needed for this function. Basic to the study was the belief that improved performance of the teaching function will contribute directly to the improvement of nursing service by assisting the patient and his family to handle their health problems more effectively and by helping the nursing co-worker to give better nursing care.The limitations of space here prevent a detailed presentation of the rationale underlying the conclusions concerning the teaching function of the professional nursing practitioner. The conclusions may be summarized as follows:The teaching reported in this study may be classified as simple communication, and structured teaching.The structured teaching can be shown to be a function; this function can best be performed by the nursing practitioner.The teaching function of the nursing practitioner may be defined as follows:This teaching function can be shown to can-form to McManus' description of a professional function of nursing which should be performed by nurses who have had a professional type of education (7).It is recommended that all basic nursing programs provide for the developing and improving of the ability of the nursing practitioner to communicate effectively.It is recommended that preparation for the professional function of structured teaching be provided in baccalaureate nursing programs.

摘要:
The aims of Nursing Research are often stated ambiguously and in global terms. It has been the experience of the authors in reviewing research proposals and in giving consultation on research designs that lack of specificity regarding the aims of the research can adversely affect the entire research process. The following article dealing with this problem is based on material from the forthcoming book, Better Patient Care Through Nursing Research, by Dr. Faye G. Abdellah and Dr. Eugene Levine.

Summary and ConclusionsThis study of the differences in attitudes on alcoholism and its treatment between alcoholic-tuberculous patients, other tuberculous patients, and registered nurses, found that: 1) the nurses had the most favorable attitudes and the alcoholic patients the least favorable attitudes; 2) the patients tended to see their nurses as having much less favorable attitudes than the nurses actually had on alcoholism and its treatment; 3) the perception of the nurses attitudes by alcoholic patients was less accurate than by the non-alcoholic patients; and 4) the alcoholic patient tended to see the nurse as having a less favorable attitude than himself whereas the non-alcoholic patient saw the nurses as having about the same attitude as himself.The less favorable attitude of the alcoholic patients together with their poorer perception of nurses' attitudes, may be interpreted as being due to poor communication between nurses and alcoholic patients. This prevented accurate assessment of the nurses' attitudes and allowed the projection of the alcoholic's own feelings about himself to the nurses. One implication for the management of alcoholic-tuberculous patients in the hospital environment is that favorable changes in the nurses' attitudes toward treatment of alcoholism and toward the alcoholic may not be sufficient since these attitudes are not automatically communicated to the patient. The alcoholic patient must be convinced that his nurse is “for him” rather than “against him.”

Summery and ConclusionTo summarize, participant observation is at once a role, a means of getting data, and a methodology for understanding human behavior in natural contexts. It is essential to separate and specify these several aspects when reporting research studies because only in this way is it possible to assess the influence of role, techniques, and methodological orientation on research results.As a role, participant observation implies other and reciprocal roles such as subject, respondent, informant, or perhaps semi-collaborator. To date, we do not understand the influence of any of these reciprocal roles very well. On the observer's side also, the role is temporary and to a degree “unnatural.” He may choose from a limited number of forms along a continuum from that of complete observer to that of complete participant, but we have little systematic knowledge of the effect of the role on either the quantity or quality of the data he obtains.Theoretically, the complete observer and the complete participant are least disruptive of a group's activities; but the former sacrifices completeness for objectivity while the latter sacrifices objectivity and systematic recording to gain a more complete experience of the subjects' world. In the other forms of the role, observer-as-participant and participant-as-observer, the observer acknowledges his research purpose but does not avoid entering into mutually meaningful relations. But how best to maintain the proper balance between disinterested observation and emphatic participation is still a major problem.As a device for amassing detailed information on complex events and situations, participant observation ranges from the eclecticism of the anthropologist to the parsimonious elegance of the experimental social psychologist. Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of the method in its broadest definition is the use of key informants as extra eyes and ears of the observer. The observer of course must still verify and evaluate the information in terms of his growing familiarity with the total picture, but he is dependent on informants within the system and acknowledges this dependence.As a methodology, participant observation is as concerned with the sociocultural and psychosocial background of human behavior as with the behavior itself. The goal therefore is maximal knowledge and understanding of human behaviors in context. The methodology is guided by, but not slavishly bound to, the theoretical assumptions of a preconceived research design. Starting with broad conceptual frameworks, the methodology emphasizes an ongoing interplay between fact and theory, and phenomena and interpretation that becomes more abstract and narrow as it seeks fewer but more controlled variables as a study progresses. The final product is a model that retains much of the identity and character of the original phenomena but in sufficiently abstract form to permit comparison with other entities of the same general type.
