摘要:
Fifty selected nursing activities were tested for importance to 300 hospitalized adults and 100 professional nurses involved in their care in three metropolitan hospitals. Activities studied covered four areas of patient care: 1) physical care in response to physiological needs; 2) psychosocial aspects of care: 3) observing, reporting, and implementing medical care; and 4) preparing for discharge. Participants rated each nursing action on a six-point scale, from “extreme importance” to “does not apply.” The study revealed that patients were more concerned than nurses in their physical care: nurses had greater concern than patients for satisfying psychosocial aspects of care: both nurses and patients highly agreed on the importance for the nurse to carry out the doctor's orders; and both test groups found preparation for discharge of relatively little importance. Implications of these findings for nursing practitioners and students are discussed.

摘要:
Thirty low-birth-weight premature infants, between 28 and 32 weeks gestational age, were exposed to a taped recording of the mother's voice while hospitalized. These infants were matched with 30 low-birth-weight infants who did not receive supplementary auditory stimulation. Each infant's cardiac response to auditory stimuli (the mother's voice, an unknown female voice, and white noise) was measured during a testing session when an infant reached a total of 36 weeks gestational age. Measurements were recorded while the infant was quiescent and aroused. The change in heart rate to the white noise and the mother's voice teas significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group. The results were interpreted in light of Lacey's hypothesis concerning the receptivity requirements of the situation. It was concluded that the typical environment in which premature infants are cared for while hospitalized is monotonous in terms of sensory stimulation and may be affecting the responsivity of the premature infant.

摘要:
From a national sample of 220 subjects, 45 nurses who had worked in special care units for at least six months were studied to determine what differences existed between these nurses and those who had worked only in regular hospital units. Scores of the two groups were compared on two tests. Corwin's Bureaucratic and Professional Role Conceptions and Role Deprivation Test and Kramer's Integrative Hole Behavior. The prediction that SCC nurses would have higher professional and bureaucratic role conceptions than nurses working in other regular hospital units was not supported. However, subjects who dropped out of nursing from both groups had significantly higher professional role configurations. The prediction that SCC nurses would develop higher integrative role behavior (to handle conflict) was supported in part, i.e., for all except SCC dropouts. An SCC questionnaire was used to determine if SCC nurses perceived opportunities to combine instrumental and expressive role functions. Findings indicated that 80 per cent of the nurses who stated that they had no problem combining these two role functions are no longer working in SCC's.

摘要:
Coronary care nurses function in a new nursing role; they may have new attitudes about nursing. The purpose of this study, using reference theory, was to identify certain attitudes of coronary care nurses and to compare these with attitudes of nurses in other nursing units. It was hypothesized that coronary care nurses have formed a subgroup within the profession of nursing and, as a result, a new comparison reference group has emerged. A questionnaire was designed and used to interview 60 nurses employed in 15 hospitals throughout the area served by the Regional Medical Program for Western New York. Thirty of the nurses worked in coronary care units and 80 worked in other units of the hospitals. The interviewing was conducted through the Telephone Lecture Network (a two-way telephone system). The questions were pretaped on a ten-minute cartridge which was automatically set to stop after completion of each question. This procedure allowed for probing of answers when necessary. In general, the proposed hypotheses were confirmed. It appeared that within the nursing profession a subgroup has formed with different attitudes about nursing care. Coronary care nurses seemed to have a different frame of reference than other types of nurses with respect to a higher aspiration level—a level requiring greater use of judgment and responsibility, and offering greater challenge.

摘要:
Behavorial acts of 42 heroin addicts—27 male, 15 female—on a six-day detoxification program in an inpatient psychiatric ward over a five-month period were studied. Background of the patients was examined, analysis was made of medications, patients' behavior was measured on a behavioral rating scale. Hospital days and shifts during which patients made most requests for medication, shifts during which greatest number of negative behavioral acts occurred, and the general behavioral patterns of the patients were charted. Implications for nursing are discussed.

摘要:
Comparison of concepts of priority and importance of health of 23 nurses and 20 low-income mothers of high-risk infants revealed little difference in values. However, when nurses were tested regarding supposed health values of the mothers, a large discrepancy resulted. There were few differences in value between mothers who kept and those who failed appointments; but mothers who had high preventive cure scores had a higher tendency to keep health care appointments for their infants.

摘要:
To study possible racial prejudice in white nurses and the reaction of black patients and to attempt to ascertain if prejudice keeps black patients from seeking health care, attitudes of 23 white nurses were measured and ten black families were interviewed. Prejudice in the nurses appeared to be minimal; black families, however, appeared to perceive prejudice in clinic nurses and some health workers, but not in public health nurses or nutritionists.

摘要:
The September-October 1971 issue of Nursing Research contained an article by Lorraine Olszewski Walker entitled “Toward a Clearer Understanding of the Concept of Nursing Theory” (pp. 428–435). Comments on Doctor Walker's article were invited for the purpose of encouraging further dialogue on the concept of nursing theory, and reactions were published in the November-December 1971 issue of Nursing Research (pp. 493–502). Commenting were Rosemary Ellis, “Reaction to Walker's Article”; Powhatan J. Wooldridge, “Meta-theories of Nursing: A Reaction to Dr. Walker's Article”; Jeannette R. Folta. “Obfuscation or Clarification: A Reaction to Walker's Concept of Nursing Theory”; and James Dickoff and Patricia James, “Clarity to What End?”. Doctor Walker's response to these discussions develops further thoughts on nursing theory.
