摘要:
How scientific knowledge is developed and organized into theories; how theories describe, explain, or predict events as they take place in the real world; how models describe the relationships that may exist among concepts in a developing theory; and how theory has application in nursing practice are discussed.

摘要:
When a questionnaire that measures job satisfaction was given to 17 pediatric nurse practitioners, 18 extended role nurses, and 38 other registered nurses, the pediatric nurse practitioners rated highest both in intrinsic and in overall job satisfaction. More registered nurses without specialized role training, however, were found to be satisfied with their choice of nursing as a career and would choose it again were they given a chance. Underlying causes for these findings were explored.

摘要:
A questionnaire to measure attitudes toward death and dying persons was administered to 108 freshmen and 69 seniors in a baccalaureate nursing program. Compared to freshmen, the responses of senior students indicated greater acceptance of feelings, more open communication, and broader flexibility in relating to dying patients and their families. These differences were statistically significant (p = .01). A nursing curriculum is described which provided experiences in caring for dying patients; classes on loss, grief, and death; small group discussions and the availability of one-to-one counseling for students who take care of dying patients.

摘要:
To determine if chronically ill children showed different response trends on the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility questionnaire when compared with well children from two previously reported studies—one group of 29 students (Cook, 1970) and one group of 932 students (Crandall et al., 1965), 24 male and female chronically ill children were tested, using means and “t” tests. Data analysis revealed that there were different response trends between the two groups. Different behavioral trends were also found within the chronically ill group.

摘要:
To survey basic knowledge of syphilis and gonorrhea held by junior and senior high school nurses in Massachusetts, a two-part 52-item questionnaire was mailed to 170 nurses. Of these, 129 (or 76 percent) were returned. The instrument was designed by the investigators with the expectation that no school nurse would score below 36 on a 40-point scale. Only 41 (32 percent), however, had scores of 36 or above. The school nurses were found to be least informed about treatment of contacts, long-term effects of venereal disease, where the infected receive treatment, infection sites, treatment, physicians' knowledge regarding diagnosis and asymptomatic females.

摘要:
In an investigation which compared time estimation of hospitalized patients during febrile and afebrile states, 20 patients, chosen on the basis of a clearly defined sampling plan, were randomly assigned to two groups. Patients in Group I estimated a 10-second interval; those in Group II, a 30-second interval. The mean temperature elevation in Group I was 99.6° F; in Group II, 99.7° F. The method of production was used in the estimates. Each subject pressed a button to produce a tone for what he estimated was the designated length of time. The time was recorded with a stop-clock to determine the accuracy of the estimate. Means of the estimates were recorded in two sessions—during a febrile state and later, when the patient had returned to a normothermic state. Time sense in Group II was found to be speeded significantly by an elevated body temperature, but the estimates of Group I were not significantly speeded. Implications of this finding for nursing care are discussed.

摘要:
An investigation of the attitudes of 128 undergraduates, 66 graduate nursing students, and 62 nursing faculty at a university school of nursing in New York State toward death and dying was completed using the questionnaire, “Attitudes toward Death and Dying.” The subscale scores of fear of death of self, fear of death of others, fear of dying of self, fear of dying of others, general fear of death, and the consistency of attitudes toward death were compared according to levels of education and areas of clinical specialization. The results indicated that fears of death and dying decreased with increased education, but differences based on area of clinical specialization were not statistically significant.

摘要:
In a replication at the University of Oregon School of Nursing in 1972 of a study conducted between 1960 and 1962 of University of California nursing students' images of their chosen profession, beginning students in both schools were found to hold similar views of nursing and of personal occupational values. Faculty at the two schools were found to be alike in their emphases. Selective changes in their conceptions of nursing were found to have taken place during the year of study regarding advanced professional, bureaucratic, lay, and traditional images of the profession. Students in the Oregon study arrived at a higher consensus of what they considered important in nursing, but neither group showed greater achievement in consensus of what they believed characterized nursing. The Oregon students were more able to reconcile their perceptions of nursing
