摘要:
Study results can be no better than the quality of the raw data on which they are based. When the securing of these data depends upon the services of workers who are staff members of other agencies and who have assumed this responsibility in addition to their regular assignments, special safeguards must be provided for the collection of field materials. The collection of data for the study reported in this paper covered a period from February 1, 1954 to February 1, 1956. Reports and records were received regularly by the study staff. At the end of the study, records had been received for every case listed on the admission reports. In the post study conference the field participants were still full of enthusiasm and ideas, and even volunteered to assist with another study if they were needed. It is felt that the procedures used in the conduct of the study had a definite relation to the attitudes of the research associates and to the completeness of the data submitted. They were well oriented to the entire study plan and the importance of their contribution. They participated in the planning for the collection of field data and made the final decisions regarding the practicability of securing the items desired. They also had an opportunity for periodic face to face conferences with a member of the study staff to discuss problems and to interpret materials in the basic records. They received reports of developments and of progress of the other aspects of the study that were the responsibility of the study staff. They participated in the analysis and interpretation of the findings. They were and are considered as an integral part of the total study staff.

摘要:
In order for nurses in tuberculosis hospitals to evaluate a patient effectively, it is necessary to obtain an accurate description of his ward behavior and the way he reacts to his hospitalization. This has been made possible by means of the development of a scale that yields a reliable measure of behavior, relatively uninfluenced by subjective opinion and general impression. The Ward Behavior Scale used in this study serves this purpose at this hospital, being used by the patient education coordinator and other nurses. By utilizing this scale, they are able to objectify their knowledge of the patients into a meaningful prediction of whether or not they will be able to remain until they receive maximum hospital benefits. It has been demonstrated that those patients judged as being nonconforming and uncooperative are very likely to leave the hospital prematurely. If enough knowledge is gained about these patients soon enough, it is possible that something may be done to help them. Ancillary services can be utilized, ward personnel alerted to the problem patient, and the total resources of the hospital concentrated on saving the patient from interruption of his treatment.
