&NA;An autotutorial, audiovisual minicourse was designed to: 1) inform nurses and other hospital personnel to handle effectively problems associated with contamination and decontamination of respiratory therapy equipment according to the best procedures currently available. 2) investigate how different instructional methods are related to student achievement, and 3) determine an effective approach for implementing this educational modality. The subjects—137 allied health students. predominantly nurses, enrolled in introductory microbiology in the Department of Biology, Georgia State University. Atlanta, during the Spring Quarter 1974—were randomly placed in four treatment groups: 1—programmed instruction (PI). 2—audiovisual (AV), 3—A V‐PI combined, 4—no exposure to the mini‐course‐control group. Achievement was measured by comparing pre‐ and posttest scores on a subject matter achievement test. An analysis of variance revealed that not all treatment population means were equal. Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference Test showed that all three groups exposed to one or both methods of the minicourse scored higher than the control group. with the AV‐PI group scoring highest.

&NA;Observations of distractions during intershift report at nurses' stations on ten medical‐surgical units in an acutecare general hospital are summarized. Almost five times more auditory and visual distractions occurred at nurses' stations at which report took place at an open charting desk than at nurses' stations with a separate reporting area.

&NA;This pilot study investigated epidemiologically the potential for clinically significant drug‐drug interactions, a subclass of adverse drug responses, in two homes for the elderly. The agent (drugs). host (residents), and environment (rural and urban nursing homes) in the illness known as drug‐drug interaction were studied. Drug profiles on 188 subjects were compiled and screened by computer. Of these, 100 (80 in the rural home and 20 in the urban home) had the potential for clinically significant drug‐drug interactions. Laboratory diagnostic procedures essential to confirm the unintentional interaction of two or more drugs were beyond the scope of the study; therefore, physicians independently reviewed the records of 66 residents who could be interviewed, agreeing that 27 residents were potential drug‐drug interactors. These subjects had twice as many drug products and three times as many pro re nata products prescribed for them as did subjects without the potential for drug‐drug interaction. The possible cause of interaction found most frequently was digitalis combined with thiazide or furosemide. The results of this pilot study suggest several implications for practice within the research setting.

&NA;In an anthropologic study of illness referral among Latin‐American immigrants three phases were ascertained: First, there was extended use of self‐treatment. Second, referrals were made to the social network, particularly to people from the same country of origin. Finally, referrals to the professional network were made to professionals with the same cultural heritage. Latin‐American immigrant families living in a cooperative were studied over a 14‐month period, utilizing the method of participant observation, a family health calendar, and interviews. This report focuses on the results of the family health calendar. Most illnesses reported by families did not go beyond self‐treatment. Cultural influences including language, social network, priorities of daily living were related to the alternatives selected by families when illness incidents oc‐curred.
