摘要:
AbstractConfigurationscomprise assemblies of technological and nontechnological components, including human factors, built up to meet local contingencies. Examples are drawn from robotics, production systems, CAPM, and IT applications. A possible metric is outlined. Unlikegeneric systems, configurations do not evidence particular dynamics of development. They may represent an early stage of an overall life‐cycle, with a generic mature phase. The participation of users at various levels, familiar with local contingencies, isnecessaryto build configurations. User knowledge, job design, and human factors are not adjuncts, but essentialinputsto the innovation process, helping to crystallize contingencies into novel artifact

摘要:
AbstractIn order to be effective, human factors interventions must have a better understanding of technology and the processes within organizations which shape both technology and its effects on the work that human beings do. Rather than being primarily determined by the capabilities and characteristics of technology, it is argued that the organizational outcomes of technological change are a product of political processes of choice and social negotiations within adopting organizations. Technical influences, though, are seen as one important factor enabling and constraining the process of choice and negotiation. Some of the implications of this view for human factors considerations are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThis article considers the development of Computer Aided Production Management as a function of paradigms of work organization. CAPM design has been heavily influenced by manufacturingfashions—U.S. models of centralized production, and now, Japanese manufacturing methods. CAPM implementation is an important site for further technological innovation. To make CAPM workable in local conditions, users have to expend considerable effort in system customization. Case studies demonstrate how these systems are reconfigured when the standardized structures and rigid procedures of CAPM fail to fit users' own idiosyncratic manufacturing circumstances. Innovation therefore continues into the implementation stage of a technology's developmen

摘要:
AbstractProduction and inventory control systems as steering and monitoring mechanisms were formalized at an early stage in large American firms. The shape and use of these systems contains many core features which are identifiably American and reflect their societal embedding. These core features are evident in their contemporary variants. When the systems were transferred to Japan, key elements of the core were repositioned to create an alternative template of corporate coordination. In Britain their adaptive implementation is impeded by the competing templates of international best practice and by the structured inability to create a relevant blending of the available elements.
