AbstractThe ability to classify maximum expiratory flow‐volume (MEFV) curves has been explored for several types of principal component analysis (PCA). The PCAs differed in their methods of transformation of the data. These included discrete non‐linear transformation with or without additional restrictions, or continuous linear (classical PCA) and piecewise linear transformation using first degree B‐splines.Two hundred and fifty curves of males between 21 and 30 years of age were involved in these analyses. Although no real pathology occurs among these males, still a clearly differentiated classification of curve types was found. The results were passively gauged with respect to smoking habits and respiratory symptoms. The analysis using piecewise linear transformations differentiated best between people with and without respiratory symptoms, and between smokers and non‐smokers.In general pathology is rare and to be found at the lower tail of a lung function measurement. As the piecewise linear transformations resulted in a more pronounced negative skewness of the relevant variables, the gain of this transformation with respect to the discrete analyses is to be found in the ability to use the information content within a category and with respect to the continuous linear analysis the ability to pronounce this info

AbstractRelative to the problem presented and treated by Parisot in an earlier issue of this journal,1we present a new solution based on our approach of hierarchical classification. The methodology used, that we will describe in a concise way, allows us to organize either the set of the descriptive variables or the set of the individuals. Its extreme generality includes a set theoretic coding which respects faithfully the globality of the intrinsic nature of the descriptive variables. Very rich results are obtained in terms of classification trees reduced to their ‘significant’ levels. One of the most significant levels corresponds to the partition obtained by Parisot. The ‘significant’ nodes indicate the most relevant associations. AbstractBy using an ‘index of dissimilarities’, the present study demonstrates that certain questions and response categories worded in English and Japanese did not yield functionally equivalent responses in a series of surveys conducted in Japan and the United States among bilingual students. When students are thinking in Japanese, they are more likely to select a middle position response such as ‘it depends on…’ than when they are responding in English. The trend was observed among American students responding in Japanese as well. AbstractConsider anm‐machine flow shop withnjobs. The processing time of jobj,j= 1,…,n, on each one of themmachines is equal to the random variableXjand is distributed according toFj. We show that, under certain conditions, more homogeneous distributionsF1,…,Fnresult in a smaller expected makespan. We also study the effect of the variability of distributionFjon the expected waiting costs of thenjobs and on the job sequencing which minimizes this total expected waiting cost. We show that the smallest (largest) variance first rule minimizes the total expected waiting cost on a single machine when the waiting cost function is increasing convex (concave). We also show that the smallest variance first rule minimizes, under given conditions, the total expected waiting cost in anmmachine flow shop when the waiting cost function is increasing convex. AbstractAn algorithm fornth degree stochastic dominance is developed using necessary conditions derived by Whitmore, Jean and Jean and Helms to reduce the computation time. The algorithm is presented and tested to determine run times for large sets of portfolios. The algorithm is fast enough computationally to be useful for both research projects and practical applications.

AbstractIn a planning effort for a region of Poland a problem structuring session was set up to assess the importance, imminence, and danger factor of issues arising through rapid development. These issues were ordered by a number of judges for the three features mentioned. An aggregation of these orderings was called for.
