Using the Adult Education Colloquium (AEC) at Florida State University as a model program, the authors discuss the importance of a Student‐Directed Learning Structure (SDLS) in graduate adult education programs. The AEC, as an SDLS, combines theory and practice to: (a) promote professional development, (b) encourage self‐development, (c) increase knowledge of a diverse field, and (d) provide an opportunity to contribute to the development of the adult education program.
