The electric field, the front/back ratio, and the input impedance of an antenna with a single, tuned, parasitic radiator at constant power are determined, with the newly available approximate second-order self- and mutual impedances used instead of the previous first-order values, which were much less accurate. Theoretical curves for the field and for the front/back ratio are compared with the experimental data of several investigators and it is shown that, if account is taken of significant factors, theory and experiment are in agreement.

摘要:
The principles of the travelling-wave valve as a phase-modulator and frequency-shifter are discussed. Measurements made on a typical valve operating at 4 000 Mc/s are recorded and show that about ± 2.5 radians linear phase shift is obtainable with a modulating signal of ± 50 volts injected in series with the beam voltage. Larger phase shifts may be obtained by applying the modulating voltage to a number of valves in tandem.Travelling-wave valves may also be used to shift the frequency of a carrier, e.g. from 4 000 to 4 035 Mc/s, by injecting a 35-Mc/s sinusoidal voltage in series with the beam voltage. When used in this way the gain and power output are only about 6 db below those obtained with the same valve used as an amplifier. The possible applications of travelling-wave valves as phase-modulators and frequency-shifters in the transmitters and repeaters of radio relay systems are discussed.

摘要:
The paper is an attempt to assess the power-carrying capacity, within the limits of electrical breakdown, of various forms of metal waveguide. The discussion relates to wave modes commonly used inside tubes of rectangular and circular cross-section, or alternatively outside a solid wire.It is assumed that the guides are surrounded by air dielectric, of uniform cross-section, free of obstacles and discontinuities. The results show that for hollow guides the H modes are inferior to the E modes in respect of power-carrying capacity.The solid wire guide supporting a surface wave has an astonishing performance considering the cross-section of the conductor concerned, and for millimetre wavelengths particularly this form has much to recommend it.
