摘要:
Many advocates of a new professional degree argue that present degrees offered by the universities are unsatisfactory for the training of organizational psychologists who plan to work in non‐academic settings. The arguments supporting professional degrees assume firstly, that psychological knowledge is mature enough for application, secondly, that there are strong overseas precedents for such degrees, and thirdly, that new degrees are necessary if psychology is to be socially relevant. These assumptions are critically examined and it is concluded that none of them are tenable. However, it is agreed that there is a need for improved training in organizational psychology. It is maintained that present courses are generally inadequate because they do not provide substantial research experience. Furthermore, improved training in organizational psychology is unlikely to appear until the profession defines what is meant by a competent psychologist and university departments hire more staff who are able to teach organizational psychology. At present, staffing policies of university departments reflect an unsubstantiated belief in the primacy of traditional experimental areas of psychology. If the goals of training were defined and staff provided for teaching then professional and academic training could be accommodated by the Ph.D degree. This would require some universities to recognize that coursework and practical experience could be an essential but not a primary component of the Ph.

摘要:
Intrusion upon people rendered relatively helpless, withholding of information and abuse of confidentiality, are examples of behaviour by psychologists which point to an element of presumption in their manner of operating. The rights of clients are not respected by this type of professional practice. In both research and professional work, psychologists have employed techniques involving coercion, deception, concealment and stress. Such practices have been perpetuated by psychologists' concern with status, by their allegiance to institutions as clients, in a word, by the professionalization of psychology. The remnants of the classical behaviourist paradigm, with its emphasis upon behaviour under exclusive external control, continues to produce serious limitations in contemporary psychological theorizing. As a result, problems arise concerning the “ethics” of psychologists' conduct. But because the behaviourist paradigm is arguably at the base of this problem it may be better to conceive the issue not so much in terms of morals as of methodol

摘要:
Conciliation is a major function of Family Court Lawyers and Counsellors. A systems model is presented to guide thinking about and the practice of conciliation of disputes in a legal setting. Sub‐systems include the interview, the parents, the conciliator, conciliation, negotiation and legal processes. Nine goals for the process are listed, and selected theory and findings from the literature of counselling and psychotherapy, marriage and family counselling, industrial relations, organisation development, conflict resolution and areas of general psychology are discussed in relation to the model. The parents' cognitive schemas, the need for skills training and other learning experiences for the parents, and the role of the conciliator as a “third party” in a bargaining situation, are particular emp

摘要:
A questionnaire assessing atttiudes to clinical theory and practice was administered to a sample of Australian clinical psychologists. Analysis of responses revealed three dimensions of attitudes which were respectively identified as Scientist‐Practitioner, Behavioural and Humanistic. These attitudes varied systematically with mesures of theoretical orientation in such a way as to give confidence that they represented valid characteristics of some Australian clinical psychologists. The degree of overlap between these, and dimensions of attitudes derived from a North American study, indicated a consistency between Australian clinicians and their American colleague

摘要:
The potential of the Indices of Communication and Discrimination in filling a need for a measure of characteristic empathic behaviour is discussed in relation to data on rater reliability and score consistency and stability. on the basis of the results presented, it is concluded that the Indices could be expanded to yield a satisfactory measure of characteristic empathy.

摘要:
The measurement of which theoretical orientation counsellors follow has been suggested as beneficial to counselor training and research. One scale (the Counselor Orientation Scale, Loesch&McDavis, 1978) has been used both in the USA and Australia and results presented which argue for the reliability and validity of this instrument. A replication of these studies was performed and data suggest that, while the reliability of the COS is adequate, 22 of the 35 items are unnecessary and do not discriminate between orientations as claimed. A global question is suggested as an alternative to this instrument.

摘要:
The relationships between early reading achievement, oral language ability, and the home were studied in a group of 543 school‐entry age children. Using hierarchical multiple regression it was found that socioeconomic status was associated with both reading achievement and oral language ability. However, this association occurred largely because socioeconomic status was associated with educational processes in the home which contribute more directly to early achievement. In addition home educational processes were found to contribute to early reading achievement primarily by providing oral language skills and to a lesser extent by providing specific reading skills. The inadequacy of using socioeconomic status to investigate the relationship between the home and school achievement was discusse

摘要:
It is argued that the recent emphasis on applied social psychology offers new academic goals and novel professional opportunities for psychologists. One such area of applied social psychology, tourism research, is reviewed within this context. A widely scattered but identifiable literature was shown to exist. Interestingly, the existing tourism research, including some Australian material, was seen to emphasise longitudinal, emic, contextual and processual aspects of research. This may be seen as a healthy corrective to laboratory based approaches to social psychology. Further, it was argued that the professional possibilities for psychologists in the expanding tourist industry have scarcely been considered. Given the topic matter of much tourism research, the development of new professional roles for social psychology researchers would seem to be imminent.

摘要:
White Australians living in rural and isolated areas were administered indices of communication apprehension, receiver apprehension and communication flexibility, and were asked about their previous contacts, communication success, and concerns with Australian Aborigines. Greater receiver apprehension and communication inflexibility were associated with a reported inability to communicate with Aboriginies and a lack of informal, social contact between the groups, although generally not with amounts of previous contact or majority concern for the minority. These particular interpersonal apprehensions relating to communication, if not considered, may diminish the effectiveness of cross‐cultural training programme
