摘要:
Respondents from the general population rated the degree to which 25 different motives contributed to their decision to delay or avoid seeking help for a distressing personal problem. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed five general clusters of motives to avoid helpseeking. These were labelled: Fear and Stigma, Problem Avoidance and Denial, Helper Evaluation, External Barriers, and Independence. Respondents who rated the Fear and Stigma items highly had problems that were seen as being intimate and internally attributed. Females were more likely to report Problem Avoidance and Denial motives than were males. Respondents with an external locus of control were somewhat more concerned with Helper Evaluation and External Barriers, and were somewhat less concerned with Independence, than were respondents with an internal locus of control. It is argued that a greater understanding of people's reluctances to seek help will facilitate the development of a general decisionmaking model of helpseeking behaviour.

摘要:
The present study reports a content analysis of 80 programs shown on Brisbane TV in 1981. Programs were shown as part of a larger longitudinal study on the relationship between TV violence viewing and aggressiveness in children (Sheehan, 1993). Rating procedures were based on Gerbner's Message System Analysis methodology and allowed reliable observations of programming content. The major unit of violence analysis was the “violent episode” and primary focus of the study was on the television portrayal of physical violence. Analyses report on the prevalence, frequency and rate of violent episodes, role analyses of characters involved, the impact of sex of characters, and the context of the program. Results indicated an intensity of violence broadcasting that was comparable to countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom; strong sex bias was observed in violence portrayal; and the context of violence was heightened by aggression being located in the present. Some implications of the data for program control were discussed together with the role social scientists can play in monitoring the level of TV viole

摘要:
This paper extends the data base of a previous study examining the role of the psychologist in rehabilitation settings. Results are reported of 78 health professionals employed in rehabilitation facilities in the U.S. and comparisons are made between this sample and the Victorian sample whose results were previously reported. As in the earlier study, the key task was for respondents to personally rate the perceived appropriateness of psychologists' having primary responsibility for 20 key rehabilitation activities. of secondary importance, respondents were asked to stipulate which professional group(s) should perform these activities in the respondent's workplace. The main findings were: (1) many activities were rated as being appropriate to the psychologist's role; (2) in the U. S. sample, the involvement of the psychologist in rehabilitation settings is regarded more favourably than it is in the Victorian setting; (3) in addition to their role in rehabilitation being positively regarded respondents felt the psychologist should take primary responsibility for 6 out of the 20 rehabiltation activities performed. Issues and further implications for Australian psychologists are discussed.

摘要:
One hundred and seven persons who graduated in honours psychology from the University of Melbourne in 1979, 1980 and 1981 responded to a questionnaire concerned with employment, career plans and postgraduate study. In this paper, we report data concerning what jobs psychology graduates find, what job satisfaction they enjoy, and how they perceive their medium and long term futures. In summary, we found that graduates took on a wide variety of jobs, that many continued with further study, and that involuntary unemployment was rare although jobs are becoming more difficult to get. Most graduates were satisfied with their work, but did not, in general, see themselves remaining in their present employment in the long term.

摘要:
Justificatory accounts of 50 entrants in the Melbourne marathon were collected with the aim of obtaining a description of the various meanings this event has for its participants. The accounts were classified into seven groups based on the different ways each used the marathon as a solution to the concerns of work progress and physical well‐being. The marathon was generally seen in these accounts as a “test of hazard” which is actively sought by entrants to resolve these developmental issues. As such this event can be placed in the larger scheme of “moral career” which, as used by Harre, relates an individual's life history to cultural values. Using this framework, the decision to run a marathon can be related to the currently salient cultural value of physical responsibility. The possible symbolic significance of this value as an expression of collective strength was argued for on the basis of a brief historic
