摘要:
1985 is the one hundredth anniversary of Freud's visit to Paris to study at the Salpêtrière with Charcot. The impact of that visit on Freud's understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the formation and removal of neurotic symptoms is assessed. An evaluation of the progress made in understanding the basis of therapeutic effects since that time is attempted. It is argued that our understanding has remained defective because we have continued to look at the problem from the perspective inherited from Freud, a perspective that identifies specific causes and specific remedies incorrectly and fails to give placebo effects their proper recognition. The obverse of this perspective has led us to pay insufficient attention to the ways patients seek help or experience the processes by which they resolve their problem

This study examines the opinions of 112 northern Australian adolescents concerning the importance of various qualities and skills for their lives as students, and for life in general. Among other analyses, a multidimensional scaling (MDS) technique was used to investigate the substructure of these perceptions. The data indicate that these youngsters believe that socio‐motivational qualities are more important than intellectual ones, not only for life in general, but also during their student days. The students rated effort (“Doing your best”) as the most important quality for success at school and in later life. Different analyses, across several sets of judgements, indicate a high degree of consensus and consistency in these judgements. It was tentatively suggested that the one group difference which emerged might be attributed to different rates of development of gender schema and self‐concepts of boys and girls. This paper reports two related studies which investigated children's and adults' perceptions of an unusual television drama program,Monkey.In the first study 210 Grade 6 children and 69 young adults were asked for program preferences, viewing frequency, and comprehension of an episode ofMonkey.In the second study 36 Grade 6 children and 53 young adults rated a set of statements for importance in good quality children's drama (TV Rating Scale), and for accuracy in describingMonkey(Program Rating Scale). Results showed thatMonkeywas less popular than other programs on at the same time, and that responses to the program and comprehension of the episode were significantly related to age and sex. The rating scales provided information about qualitative features which respondents judged important for good children's television drama, and features ofMonkeywhich influenced their judgements of the program.

A survey of knowledge and attitudes towards lour mental health professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and counsellors) collected data from 502 respondents representative of Australian society. Results indicated that the four professions were perceived as providing fairly distinct services to the public and fell into two sub‐groups: (1) psychologists and psychiatrists as private‐practice and fee‐demanding professionals who study human behaviour and thoughts, and (2) social workers and counsellors as public‐utility non‐fee‐demanding professionals who are more practical and help the average person solve emotional problems. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a convenient method to measure the amount and direction of bias in survey interviewing. Repeating a central question at the beginning and end of a thematic interview permits one readily to establish the amount of change admitted by the respondents — presumably as a result of the interview experience. In the current study on gambling attitudes and behaviour the following findings are reported:1About one in six respondents changed their attitudes toward the casino in the course of the interview;2Positive and negative change was balanced suggesting a fair interview schedule;3Young respondents were least likely to change their mind;4Respondents with less than 10 years of education were most likely to change;5Gender, political ideology and religious commitment were not related to proclivity to change;6Interviewers' attitudes toward the casino did not influence the respondents' attitudes toward it;We recommend the inclusion of such testing strategies in all thematic interview

Psychological theory and research have much to contribute in strengthening the development and evaluation of health promotion programmes. It is argued that programmes, large‐scale campaigns and public policy should be anchored more firmly in basic research, but that there are inevitable incompatibilities between maximal validity and ideal generality of behavioural research in health promotion. However, compromises may be sought which attempt to maximize both validity and generality.
