The central focus of the paper is the attempt by demographers, sociologists, economists and psychologists to understand fertility behaviour in developing and developed nations. Historically, demographers have dominated the field, particularly as psychologists in earlier research indicated little support for the influence of social‐psychological variables upon fertility behaviour, and economic models remained untested. However, non‐demographers retained an interest in population research and psychologists in the mid‐1970's attempted again large scale studies of the social and psychological determinants of fertility. Two such psychological approaches were the value of children studies, and the use of expectancy models, especially the behavioural intention and subjective expected utility frameworks. One hundred and fifty‐seven students undertaking counselling and therapy courses in 10 Australian universities were administered the Counseling‐Orientation Scale (COS) to collect information on relative counselling‐orientation preferences. The most prominent orientation overall was client‐centred with behaviour therapy least preferred, although this was not necessarily the case for indivdual universities. The pattern of results for the Australian sample was very similar to data from the American setting. To evaluate the effects of a youth work programme with a focus on interpersonal relationships, contacts were made with young people on the streets of a large Australian city. Verbalizations from them were recorded and content analysed and indicated that they were experiencing a poverty of interpersonal regard. They mentioned few satisfying interpersonal relationships and talked of being lonely. Comparison of young people who participated in the programme with others who did not indicated that the former had made at least short term gains in both of these areas, while other aspects of their experience outside the focus of the programme had not varied from the beginning to the end of the four month period of the evaluation.

Previous research has consistently shown a small positive correlation between age and job satisfaction. This correlation could result from influences associated with aging or cohort membership or both. These possible explanations were tested using a representative 1/2% sample of employees in metropolitan Adelaide. From interviews/questionnaires, measures were obtained of variables associated with aging (skill‐utilization, influence, variety and income) and of variables associated with cohort membership (desired skill‐utilization, desired influence, desired variety and education). Using partial correlations, it was found that neither aging nor cohort variables alone accounted for the expected positive correlation between age and job satisfaction. However, the correlation became unsubstantial when the joint effects of aging and cohort variables were partialled out. This finding was interpreted in terms of decreasing discrepancy between desired and perceived job attributes with increasing

Questionnaires were completed by 214 female, final‐year students in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, medical record administration and nursing, at Cumberland College of Health Sciences. Student groups differed significantly in the factors influencing their career choices, degree of satisfaction with these choices, changes in ideas regarding professional work, likelihood of changing occupations, levels of ambition, aspects of work regarded as important, and future plans. Relative to most other groups physiotherapy students expressed greater satisfaction with career choice, fewer changes in ideas regarding professional work and less intention of changing occupations. Occupational therapy students expressed lower satisfaction, greater likelihood of changing occupations, and greater changes in ideas regarding professional work. Speech pathology students' ideas regarding professional work changed considerably but they were very satisfied with their career choice and unlikely to contemplate leaving their profession or the workforce. Medical record administration students expressed lower career choice satisfaction, were more ambitious, and had relatively distinct work values. Nurses occupied a median position on most variables. The McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) has been suggested as a potential device for early screening of children with learning difficulties. Two suggested MSCA short form tests combining six subtests, one selected by an a priori method and the other from a regression analysis method, were investigated using a sample of 41 Victorian children between the ages of two‐and‐a‐half to eight‐and‐a‐quarter years. The stability of the values obtained in 1959 by Cox and Leaper in their Australian adaptation of the General and Test Anxiety Scales for children was examined. In view of the liberalized evaluative climate in the schools over the past two decades a decrease in test anxiety levels for both sexes over all grades was predicted. An attempt was also made to obtain values on both scales for those grades not included in the original normative sample. The results indicated that there was no decrease in test anxiety levels except in the case of third grade boys, but appeared to cast some doubt upon the construct and content validity of both scales. The implication of these results and suggestions for further research were discussed.
