The performance of 143 Malaysian five year old urban children bilingual in Malay and English (75) and Chinese and English (68) on operational tasks in English and their other language was related to their performance on vocabulary and language background. No statistically significant difference between Malay and Chinese groups was found on performance on the operational tasks. The order of acquisition of concepts showed that volume, weight and quantity were acquired in that order in three or four groups and in the fourth the order was quantity, volume and weight. The English form of the vocabulary task correlated significantly with English background for the Chinese sample but not for the Malays, and significantly and positively with performances in English on the operational tasks for both groups, but Chinese background was negatively and significantly correlated with performance on operational tasks in Chinese. It was suggested that social factors might account for the Chinese result. Malay children did significantly better in Malay than in English.

Attention focused on the attitudes of 140 psychology students toward the mentally ill and community care, on the dual assumptions (a) that relevant professional groups must share a basically humanistic and tolerant approach, and (b) that tertiary institutions have a significant role to play in the inculcation of such attitudes. It was demonstrated that the attitudes of second, third, and fourth year students were less authoritarian and more inclined toward mental health ideology than the attitudes of first year students. Comparisons were drawn between the present study and a recent investigation into the attitudes of secondary school students. Results were discussed within the framework of limitations imposed by the nature of the study and the implications for future research.

Two hundred and twenty six Australian University students were given two administrations of the Bem Sex‐Role Inventory, yielding high test‐retest reliability scores.
